    Hey,

Just wondering what's a good source of fibre for vegetarians? I friend of mine is a veggie and I was recommending getting more protein in but all I could think of was tofu and she doesn't like tofu. This veggie doesn't eat fish. All I could come up with was egg whites. Any ideas? I don't want to recommend taking Whey or Ram right off as natural options would be better received.

    Thanks,
    Gumby,

Nuts are high in protein, high in calories too due to the high fat content. Chickpeas have a fair bit of protein. I am not sure if you can buy whey in shops here (real whey, not whey protein powder)
Whey or milk plasma is the liquid remaining after milk has been curdled and strained; it is a by-product of the manufacture of cheese or casein and has several commercial uses
The making of tofu from soy milk is similar to the technique of making cheese from milk

They are not too far removed from each other. Many people seem to view whey powder as some sort of drug or syntheic compound. People seem to have all sorts of weird ieads about it. It is a naturally occuring protein that is just refined from whey to a higher concentration, just like sugar is processed from sugar beet or fruit, and veg oil is from vegetables. Many seem to have no problem consuming refined/processed carbohydrate or fats yet would not touch protein. Maybe listening to too much Joe Duffy or something...

I see whey as little different from dried skimmed milk, I love whey strawberry milkshakes.

More protein is important, but only getting protein from egg whites and chickpeas means you are not getting a number essential amino acids - that is the major concern for vegetarians (that and the fact that they have made, what I think, is a ridiculous lifestyle choice! Yes that's right, I agree with Dennis Leary on vegetarianism!)

Are you looking for a source of fibre or a source of protein? They are not the same thing.

eggs contain all the essential amino acids

Sources of fibre for veggies? - VEGGIES!! :)

Also oats contain soluble and insoluble fibre.

    Vegetarian sources of protein;
    1.Soya
    2. Eggs
    3. Nuts
    4. Tofu
    5. Quinoa (keen-wa)
    6. Spirulina
    7. Cheese
    8. Whey products

    To name a few!

What veggies normally need to do is a combination of 2 or more second class ( non meat source ) proteins to ensure a decent amino acid profile!

Take the list Jon posted and mix it up each meal.

Egg whites or the entire egg?

Protein - tofu & lentils about the best I'd say! What about using the Quorn range of frozen food - I like to use the mince myself.
    Fibre - veggies!

Is there much protein in the Quorn products?

Well they are billed as having good protein values.

Though my anyone who is concerned with healthy eating would take the option of a massively process almost-food is beyond me.

Hey guys! I was away for a while and just saw this now. Thanks for the tips - much appreciated!

I meant to keep it on protein but typed fibre by mistake in the original post - sorry!

    Thanks again,
    Gumby.

If it comes for fibre - bran oats would be a good solution, more apples as well.
for protein - egg whities would be OK but they don;t taste that good either. Why not trying Egg Protein powder? you say that natural options would be better recieved but egg proteing is simply made of egg whities, all they do is get rid of the water add vatamins/minerals/flavour and that's how you get the product. One portion of Egg Protein is 30g of protein one egg whitie has only 3-4g so powder it's highly concentrated.
