    pronutrition.ie.

It doesn't make that much of a difference tbh. I like NutritionX because there whey tastes good and is good value too.

I also like reflex whey and optimum nutrition.

Bit OT but any idea people when the price hikes are coming in?

Cheers. Nothing worse than protein that just has to be thrown down the hatch!!:D

dont get, dymatize apple. It tastes like some mix between strawberry vanilla nad burnt apples. Choc mint normally tastes the best from previous experience.

Go into that big pharmacy type shop on Grafton Street, its called ...and Barrets (not sure of the first name of it). Loads of the Protein supplements were reduced there last weekend, not sure if they still are.

    Alternatively, eat your own poo.

Both are probably equally sound when it comes to quality.

Do yourself a favour, get some big whey off pronutrition!!

    do pharmacies sell protein supplements??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,234 ✭✭✭Malteaser!

In the pharmacy in my college (DCU), they stocked the Nutrition-X range last year, I haven't been into it yet this year so I'm not sure if they still do though I presume they do.

I guess it depends on the phrmacy tbh, Boots sell protein supps as well like but the quality leaves a lot to be desired imo.

I suppose some might, but most health shops do. You are propably better getting them in a supplement store where the guys that are there can help you out more in relation to what you need for training.

Yeah and like Hanley already pointed out, the quality of some of the stuff in pharmacies can be complete muck!!

    Really? Is protein not protein?

Poo is partly made up of non-digested protein I think....

In all seriousness, not all protein is created equally. For one, there's what's know as the "BV" value of protein. Which is basically how well your body can process it. Whey, egg and caesin are tops here, think 80%+ bv. Grains etc are much lower down with around 40% bv.

Also, the cheaper stuff is usually packed with fillers to bulk it up. So you're buying the same amount of powder, but proportionally less protein.

The cheap stuff (the H&B body fortress brand springs to mind) is cheap for a reason. It's crap.

Reputable brands like NutritionX are ones you can trust when it comes to quality and no cross contamination.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,625 ✭✭✭✭BaZmO*

But the H&B stuff states on the label what amount of protein there is per scoop. Surely it'd be illegal to state otherwise?

Just found some info on the Body Fortress Weight Gainer.

    serving size: 85g
    23g of protein
52g carbs (51 of which are sugar)
    1.3g fat

That's the one I typically see on sale. That's pretty junk like. 23g of protein is way low, and 51g of SUGAR is ridiculous. The reason they're able to sell it so cheaply is because of how ridiculously high the sugar content is.
And the protein comes from "non fat milk solids, calcium caseinate, egg white solids and sodium caseinate". Again, pure junk.

There might be 23g of protein per serving, but the amount the body can use is much much less. Say you'er able to use 15g of it only (number coming from no where, it's an example).

If you'd taken 23g of whey, you might be able to use 20g of it.

They're using sub-par protein and bulking it up with sugar.

    See what I'm getting at?

Sound. That makes sense now. I've always wondered what the difference was between all the different brands.

Generally there seems to be 3 tiers... And I hope someone will jump in if I've got this wrong.

Bodyfortress and the likes - cheap, inferior quality, for those who don't know any better

NutritionX, ON, Reflex - Top quality, amongst the best you can buy reasonably priced

Muscletech / BSN etc - Crazy expensive, use lots of elaborate blends and fancy names that probably don't actually work any better than the likes of NutritionX

I have the Body Fortress Whey Protein.
    serving size:100g
    protein:71.49g
    carbs:7.29g
    of which sugars:4.8g

    Thats good, no?

Ummm if that's at me, I didn't say Muscletech was a H&B product did I?? I said there was 3 broad classes of supplements. One of which had H&B type stuff, one with reliable top quality resonably priced supps, and one with over the top, elaborate superlative gear.

No that wasn’t at you Hanley, I was just pointing out that it was an interesting/odd fact that H&B make both products yet only sell the muck in their own shops, (the shaker’s that they sell with the muck is branded met-rex, and they also sell Wielder protein bars among other‘s)

Myoplex springs to mind. The worst tasting (and one of the most expensive) proteins I have ever tried.

The NutritionX ProX tastes great and seems to do the trick.

Yes that appears to be a good protein. But the weight gainer does loes ridiculous once you break down the contents. You may as well eat a couple of raw eggs and a can of coke and get the same effect without the pain of mixing it... :D

Just had a look at the H&B site and while you're right about the Weight Gainer, I was talking about their normal Whey Protein which has a totally different makeup. See here

It's quite often on sale for €16.99 for a tub. Surely that's not bad for what you're getting? Is it an inferior product to other protein supplements out there?

As far as i am aware HandB and Muscletech has no financial relationship?

Muscletech are a Canadian conglomerate, an umbrella company for the dozen or so smaller companies that they release all there products under.

Also, when it comes to the scale Hanley was spot on.....especially about the blends and super products being no better than the mid tier priced stuff like ON, Nutrition X, Reflex etc.

At the end of the day the majority of supplements are hype, the ones that work best are normally the ones that deliver the same effects as a whole food but with more speed or convenience.
