External HD not working

    Hey, just bought an ext HD recently...plugged it into a USB slot just there and it says that Windows does not recognize the device...wtf?!

    Which operating system? Have you more than one USB port? If so, try the cable in a different one.

    Vista, yeah tried that and no luck...strangely it didn't work on my mate's comp yesterday too...

    try it on another USB port, or a powered USB hub

    if the drive got a knock it might be dead :(

    very old versions of windows need drivers for usb drives but 2000 , XP and vista should be ok

    have you being carrying the HD around with you chances are that the HD is knackered
    Is it a small 2.5" drive or a larger 3.5.

    if it is a 3.5 you could try removing it from the caddy and put it in a desktop see if the desktop can see the drive and can read and write to it

    If it is 2.5 you could pop it in a laptop then see if it shows up in the bios then use a bootable cd like ubuntu and see if you can access the drive with ubuntu runnung from the CD

    At least that way you can see if it is definitely a hard drive failure or if it is the USB on the caddy that is screwed
