Dublin SFC Quarter-Final

Some interesting pairings in the quarter final of the Dublin SFC.

Ballyboden St Endas v Kilmacud Crokes is the tie of the quarter finals. This pits Nalceds club against Flukeys club.Let the slaggings begin.:D
This match is on at 16:00 Sunday 7th October.

I'm confident St Vincents can put Whitehall Colmcilles away after a tight game against Na Fianna.Rory Trainor best have his free taking boots on.Throw in at 16:00 Saturday 6th Oct.Go on the Vins.

St Brigids v UCD is another potential cliff hanger.I'm going for a UCD win here by a point or two although if Bonner is on form,UCD might get beaten off the pitch. This match is at 14:30 Sunday 7th October.

All three games in Parnell Park.

Finally,in O Toole Park,St Judes play Oliver Plunketts/Eoghan Ruagh.I expect this game to be a complete no-contest if there is to be a one sided match in the quarter finals. This game is at 17:00 Sunday 7th October.

I'll be there in Parnell on both days. All boards members who are going are invited for boards beers v in one of my locals Kitty Kiernans on Collins Avenue or maybe Kavanaghs at the end of Malahide Road. This serves as a warmup for the league boards beers which is quite a while away at this stage.I expect to see the regulars there...yes you know who you are.:D

Im not confident for Boden unfortunately in this one. They let their lead slip badly against Ballymun and against a better team would have been punished alot more (altho Ballymun somehow are top of the league???). From 1-09 to 0-02 i think at half time, they went to 1-09 to 1-07 after about 15 mins of the second half. With a patch like that with a team who wont allow you a lead like 10 points at half time you will come out on the losing side 10 times out of 10. I honestly cant see Boden getting past Crokes if they dont play the whole game in top gear. Crokes by 3 points. Vinnys got the best of the draw i think. Whitehall were definately the team to get so i would say an easy enough victory for Vinnys. Vinnys by 5 points. Brigids V UCD is a tough one to call. With UCD you just never know but i would also go with them in a tight game. UCD by 2 points with the head and the heart! Finally a prediction definately with the heart, Judes to lose by 18 pints to Eoghan Ruagh :D I will definately be at the Boden game and i presume Flukey will also if he is about so i would be on for a drink or 2.

Sorry for the double post, don't know how it happened.

My gut feeling is that Kilmacud Crokes will win but I can't see Ballyboden throwing away a big lead like the last game. Not taking anything away from Boden but Crokes are a team that are so formidable that they hardly allow themselves to lose sight of the game. They completely anihilated Garda at one stage.
I'd imagine Ballyboden will start off brightly and then Crokes will settle into the game and dominate long periods of play.I'd imagine it will be a see-saw match with Crokes pulling away in injury time.

I agree that St Vincents got one of the easier draws but Whitehall Colmcilles are an up and coming side that are hungry.I think experience will win out though and I do tip Vincents to go all the way to lift the cup.St Judes would have been another easier draw for Vincents but I look forward to the game.Unfortunately,Whitehall Colmcilles is another local club near to me and I'd like to see them do well if Vinnies got knocked out but I don't believe it is good for Dublin GAA when it would come to the All Ireland club championships.

Judes v Plunketts is set to be a mis-match in my opinion but I could be wrong.

Anyway, looking forward to it and the prospect of a few beers is always a guarantee that the fans are all winners at the end of the day.:D

There is no chance Boden will see anything like that lead against Crokes, which may be a good thing. I was out with the lads after the Ballymun game and they are certainly well up for Crokes. To say they badly want to beat them would be an understatement! I think Boden will run them close it i suppose it could go either way but i think the cup belongs to Crokes this year. Could be wrong of course. Would like to see a repeat of '95 and the drink flowing in Firhouse again but doubtful this year. Young team tho with alot of talent so i think within a few years they will be challenging.

Well they are challenging now and have been knocking on the door Nalced.St Vincents will really want to avenge last years debacle against UCD just as Boden would want to defeat Crokes.UCD winning was a joke and our hopes were dashed when they went out to Rhode from Offaly.

I'm not so certain of UCD.They've been making waves in the championship but it might be huff and puff stuff.

I said in my previous post that I think Vincents can go all the way but I have been thinking more about their form this year and now I'm less optimistic. The reason being is that I watched some gruelling matches between St Vincents and Na Fianna and St Vincents have won both games by a single point.

Now Na Fianna are a good team but I wouldn't rate them as highly as Crokes,Vincents,Ballyboden or Plunketts but St Vincents were lucky to win the first match back in April when Na Fianna was awarded a last kick of the game penalty only to be brilliantly saved and then winning by a point against a 14 man Na Fianna team just last week doesn't look too encouraging.

Now I know looking at two games that were months apart from each other can be short sighted but like Nalced I think a better club would have punished Vincents given the same circumstances.I think winning a game by a single point against your rivals who were reduced to 14 men is not too encouraging.I've seen Vinnies put away teams like homework but I am more concerned that they made life harder for themselves when they had the advantage although I do credit them for working well as a team when Na Fianna had them on the ropes toward the end.Seems paradoxical I know.

Anyway,Vins to win next Saturday. It will be really interesting to watch Crokes v Boden with Flukey and Nalced on the opposite sides of the fence for a change.Maybe we could have a little bet with the losing sides rep buying the winners side rep a drink.:D

I'll be there. Blackbelt, I suggest you edit the other thread and make it a call for Boards Beers. All Dubs, and others, are invited. I am sure Tir Eoghain will be up for it, and we may get some of the other Dubs. The All Irelands are over, a sign that winter is on its way. We need ways to shorten it and liven it up! :) See you on Sunday the 7th.

Will edit it now my good friend.Winter is coming and so is my workload but while I'm not too busy,I'll take full advantage.

Will you be there for the game on Saturday as well?Vins v Whitehall Colmcilles. There is Kitty Kiernans pub on Collins Avenue and Kavanaghs on Malahide Road.If you come from the city centre you will pass it coming up the Malahide Road from Fairview.I tend to drink in there more than Kitty Kiernans although KK is closer to Parnell,Kavanaghs is closer to town and more accessible to buses.

We can choose which one and make it our home for the league boards beers.

    St Vincents hammered Whitehall Colmcille.
Final score was 4-15 to 0-12.

I'm happy with that. Even if my own club (Vinnies) don't win, I'd much rather see an actual club win.

    Up the Vins!!

Good win at the weekend.I was at the games on Sunday too and Brigids looked the best team on display and always pulled away when UCD came back into it.Glad UCD are gone to be honest,it was farcical that we lost the final to them. Not great reps for the Dublin club championship.

Crokes v Boden was great for the banter between Nalced and Flukey although the slaggings were in good taste.Boden never really got going after the 15th minute mark when Vaughan put away some free kicks and 45s.Boden got a goal to make the ending of the match more interesting but the result was never in doubt as Crokes had done their groundwork for the W.The second goal they needed never came as Crokes defended diligently and broke Bodens momentum.

Interestingly enough,Crokes only scored 3 of their 11 points from play and at one stage I thought Keaney and Griffin were going to come to blows after Griffin bested him for periods of the match.Griffin was doing what Ciaran Mac does and thats covering the whole pitch. He spent much of his time in the forward line.

We got wind that Plunketts went through but I checked the Hill 16 website and found out it was St Judes that went through with a last gasp goal.Maybe our sources left O Tooles a bit early. That result is shocking.I expected Plunketts to go through easily enough.

gotta agree there, especially since sherlock transferred to plunkett's - anyone know if they had their full dublin representation playing?

So a club with 107 years of history is not a club. Dublin GAA has a few moaners who begrudge the fact UCD can have minor and U-21's from the top counties in hurling and football and have a realistic chance of winning the title. I think they are a good thing as it raises the standard of the county championship if you are playing against future greats of the game. Erin's Isle are my first team but I always want UCD to do well.

I think the main concern is that UCD have many players that play in 2 championships. If the players chose UCD over their home club or something there wouldnt be the same concerns about it. Personally i would prefer to see someone else win it also. I would view UCD simply as a college rather than a club.

UCD may be playing gaelic football for the past 107 years but it still doesn't make them a club. A club is more than a panel of players. A GAA club is an integral part of the community. It's local pride, it's playing with players that you've played with since you were 6 years old. Does UCD GAA club fall into this category?

I'm not going to get into the debate as to whether or not UCD should play in the Dublin championship. All I'll say is that the Sigerson Cup is the holy grail for colleges. And it's not the U-21 players that do the damage for UCD, it's the 25 year old medical students eg. Stephen Lucey.

I never really had an opinion on UCD being in the Dublin championship until a few years ago i saw UCD play vincents in the hurling final and there was over 40 players on the UCD panel in the programme. The team that played in the final did not resemble the team that played in the 1st round. The UCD Panel was like an allstar Panel. If they are going to play in the championship then they should play in the league also and their panel should be confined to 30.

I decided I'd keep this thread for the rest of the Dublin championship.

Well the semi final has been made and it pits my club (St Vincents) against Flukeys club (Kilmacud Crokes) on Thurs 18th Oct and Judes play Brigids the following day.

I think Crokes have the advantage going into this match as Boden was a more competitive match than Whitehall although this isn't necessarily the case all the time.

    Time will tell.

    Times to be confirmed.

You can buy the pints when Vinnies are playing in Croke Park. The date is 17th March but the time is to be confirmed.Taking into account the football clinic Vinnies put on,one could surmise that the hurling will be put on first.:D

Yes they did. Sherlock and all the Brogans and Ross Mc Connell were all playing. Sherlock was terrible, Alan Brogan did well but Plunketts were simply poor. A very weak defence that always looked vunerable, Judes missed 2 goal chances within 10 minutes. Judes dominated most of the game but it appeared they were tiring as Plunketts began eating away at their lead with some good points. Plunketts were 3 points ahead with about 5 minutes remaining and Judes rallied with a late point and goal. Im a Judes man myself ( was playing in the JFC Final before the game which we also won :) ) and didnt think we would do it myself. What a scalp!

Fu(beeeeeeeep)in Judes! :) Only messing. (Rivalry) Didnt expect that result at all tbh. When we were told Plunketts won nobody batted an eyelid so fair balls for winning it. Id say most people expected a Plunketts victory. If you draw Vinnies or Crokes you better be there as i want to see some other poor boardsie have to sit with others after they lost to em (whether that be you, bb or flukey) :D

You took that defeat quite well Nalced.Last year Boden were knocked out by Crokes in the 4th round so there is some big rivalry there.Unfortunately Flukey won't be able to make it next Thursday.

Plunketts going out is a shock. It just goes to show that even with 4 intercounty players, you can't be guaranteed a win.Crokes have 5 in Vaughan, the Magees,Ray Cosgrove and Paul Griffin while the Vins have Mossy Quinn,Diarmuid Connolly and Ger Brennan.

Nothing against UCD, but they are not a club, and should not be playing in the championship. Anybody who is a member of a club knows what it is about. It's about the kids section, the voluntary help, managing the bar receipts, all that made worthwhile by moments in the championship sunshine. UCD has none of that and there isn't a single one of their players that wouldn't swap their 'home and hearth' club winning a championship for ten UCD titles.

Since you revived thread noticed this! Why not follow Craobh Ciarain? Not being smart just wondering.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,742 ✭✭✭blackbelt

It all goes back to when I was in school and thats the case for a lot of players where a school and GAA club are linked that that kid/player plays for that club.I went to school in Scoil Mhuire which is beside St Vincents and used to play on Saturday morning/afternoon down in the club. There is a link with the school and the club and at underage. One of the coaches is a teacher in Scoil Mhuire.

Also,Craobh Ciarain is more of a hurling club and the facilities for football are not so good but thats secondary to the above point.

Funny thing is that Derek O Reilly plays for Craobh and Stephen Loughlin plays for St Vincents.Derek didn't go to Mhuire whereas Stephen did. They are both hurlers with Stephen being a dual player. They live on my road and theres only 5 or 6 houses between them and the rivalry between those two clubs in the hurling is intense.

Thats an example of two high profile players who play for two different local clubs even if they live on the same road.
