Apparently there was a fire in the library last night.

Anyone know of any details? What areas damaged? How badly? Is it the work of students getting revenge?

Apparently this happened in GMIT a while ago...there was a big fuss...students crying and all on the news, apparently some of the books hadn't been coloured in yet.

Thats what I was reckoning. Still though that machinery room is only across a corridor from where they keep all the old theses/papers/journals etc. If they went up there would be alot of trouble.

2007 NUIG GY102 Arts (Economic and Social Studies) 235 points

Cause you obviously need to be the president of f*ckin mensa to get 235 points in the leaving cert...

Being that there's a mix of people in 3rd level institutions, and this attitude that NUIG = Smart, GMIT = Thick is annoying and stupid, even when it manifests as a crap joke.

    isn't this about a fire?

See the quote I was responding to.

I'll not divert from the topic anymore.

I was surprised by the attitude people have towards GMIT and NUIG.

I always considered Galway as having a workhorse university reputation. Solid but nothing glamorous, but I met a man who's daughter was in GMIT and when I told him that I was going to NUIG, he went "NUIG, oh la di da"

As for the Economics and Social studies, my brother is in Trinity and has a huge disdain for the Economics and Social Studies there, they call them the BESSies(Business, economics and social studies) and he described them as "jocks and oompah loompah women with fake tans who are doing it to get into daddies business"

    I havn't mentioned the fire.

    Bad.

    Bialann closed.

I think its mainly a general (and incorrect) Universities are better than ITs mindset. Also in relation to Bialann closing, how will we survive without its overpriced and sub par food?

In fairness. It is an arts course.
By the way.Science went down to 280 this year.If you only get 280 in leaving cert. You will struggle immensely with Science.Like I got near 500 points and I find it quite hard.

I got over 500 points and am finding science to be quite hard so far aswell. Especially maths. Stupid maths. ¬_¬ Also some people should really not doing Science. I heard someone ask '' WHy do atoms have the same number of electrons and protons?'' in a chemistry lecture. A real understanding of chemistry shown there. ¬_¬

Points have no bearing on the difficultiness (I know it's not a word) of a course just the demand for that course.

As for GMIT v NUIG I slag a few mates who used to go there but only as a bit of fun. I'd be much quicker to slag an Arts student in NUIG than an Engineering one in GMIT

Oh and the library is opened today for the first day since the fire. Just in case you want to know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,149 ✭✭✭ZorbaTehZ

Everything is open again. Strange smell though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,031 ✭✭✭Lockstep

We were in the History lecture for first years last week and the lecturer mentioned he hoped it would be opened this side of Christmas

    I was ****ting bricks.

Yeah, there's a campaign starting about the crappy and expensive food in the Bialann,I mean come on, so many people go there the food could be cheaper and still have good profit margins or just subsidised.

There's a guy up from college in Dublin who says food there is e1

However, I still like going in ever now and then to pay e1.60 for a plate of cholesterol for breakfast.

Oh dazzler!! If half of the stories i heard about you are true im not suprised your struggling!! :D

As mentioned below points mean nothing, was 305 for elec and comp eng when i was applying, doesn't make it any easier... just means less wanna do it!

This fire in the library seems to be a fairly regular occurance has definatly happened at least once before since i started college. Luckily as an engineering student i barely know where the library is!

What do you say Arts student?

    A) Can I get a big mac and fries

    or

    B) When's your interview for Medtronic

Heard a fire alarm going off after six this evening. Fairly sure it was coming from library. No flames in sight however.

well that would be typical half assed Irish engineering.

that fire pissed me off no end though. the one day of the year I actually wanted to use the library and it CLOSED!!! and it wasn't even a random act of violence i could sympathise with!

seriously though there is a conspiracy against me using the library... this isn't the first time...
