Has anyone noticed the development behind the Clarence hotel........looks really modern.
I was wondering if anyone knew what it was,it seems to be attached to the hotel,is it going to re-open as a hotel or as something new???

    any suggestions folks?

I'd say that it's part of the hotel which i presume is due to open some time soon. I'm only guessing but I'm basing it on the fact some of the Sligo Live concerts are planned for there for the end of October (http://sligolive.ie/programme.html). It might be the venue / large function room area.

    From the Weekender:

New music venue opens its doors for Sligo LIVE festival

SLIGO’S hottest new music venue the Clarence will open next week in time for Sligo LIVE.

The Clarence, located on Wine Street, will re-open as a live performance venue, music lounge, restaurant and hotel.

The former hotel has been closed for at least two years and work has been ongoing to transform the building to a new music venue for Sligo.

The work included a complete refurbishment along with the construction of an extension to the side of the building.

In its first week of opening, the venue will play host to five gigs over four days as part of the Sligo LIVE festival.

It will play host to one of the first gigs of this year's Sligo LIVE festival taking place over the October Bank Holiday weekend, when Beoga and Foy Vance play there on Thursday October 25.

This will be followed by performances from Duke Special, Dervish, Prison Love along with trad music sessions.

The venue is currently advertising for staff including a manager, kitchen and bar staff.

Tickets for gigs at the Clarence can be bought through Ticketmaster, or at the Model Arts and Niland Gallery or Third Wave Music.

    Thoughts?

They have a website, but its so new that there's no real info on it and therefore I'm not going to bother posting a link.

In the space of a few hours the outside of the Clarence has gone from BuildingSite to Respectable! Good job too, Sligo Live is in there tomorrow, Friday. Fair play to them. Nothing like a bit of pressure to get things moving.

i think they re open 2nite. please feel free 2 correct me if im wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,200 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Was walking by it last night and they were still working at 8.30pm.. from what i saw, it looked really nice actually!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 45 cranmore

it used 2 b a nice wee spot a couple of years ago b4 they closed 4 renovations, it was a welcome change from nv and (2 a lesser extent) toffs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,200 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Toff's to a lesser extent than Envy? Really?!

I'm mean i'm not a huge fan of either place but Envy is without doubt the worst excuse club i've ever been in!

Suppose it's all down to personal opinion though. Quite like Velvet though.

<SNIP> i hav ever had the misfortune 2 enter, i actually like toffs and can ofen b found in there on a fridat or saturday nite. but it was always a nice change 2 head up to the clarence or the wee club above the ark bar once in a while.

Edit by muffler: Be careful with rude descriptions of premises

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 45 cranmore

oh yeah, i've never been allowed in2 the velvet so cant really comment on it, apart from 2 say there always seems 2 b a very healthy amount of fine ladies coming in and out of the place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,200 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Ahh right sorry. The way you phrased it sounded like you had a preference for Envy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,023 ✭✭✭il gatto

It's much of a muchness. Whatever caché Toffs had has gone down the toilet since Velvet opened. <SNIP>Toffs has barred and vice versa. Toffs is busier than Envy at weekends, but when the students are around, Envy does better. Swings and roundabouts.

Edit by muffler: Can we be more careful with how a particular premises is described or in this case the patrons of that premises

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,023 ✭✭✭il gatto

Just to clarify, I'm not calling customers of either clubs <SNIP> :D Just a small percentage.

Edit by muffler: Last time before the red card is produced.

who is the DJ over there now?

IS Tommy F back. I noticed the last time I was home that he had sold out and moved to ENVY and was playing the likes of "come on Eilleen" - Tommy - think of yer cred man!!

Its was the first time I was in Xanadus/Equinox/ENVY for about 8 rights and did I feel old!

Just for the record I was never in it when it was called Xanabuffs!

Hopefully Budge will have an alternative night over there like the old days... Sure Shot !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,023 ✭✭✭il gatto

Budge is the only DJ who plays music I listen to at home. For someone who looks like Where's Wally, he's pretty cool  Oh. Carl Conway plays some good stuff too. Don't know if he's playing anywhere these days.

I'm thinking of going over there for dinner today, they used to be fairly decent. Anyone eaten there yet?

What is it with you people - you end up discussing dj's instead of the topic at hand. This is an ongoing problem with this forum in general and unless certain people change their posting habits sterner action will have to be taken.

I have lost count of the number of times that I've had to ask you to get back on topic on a few threads. I appreciate that its near impossible to stay on topic all of the time and there has been ample tolerance shown by both myself and nanook in this regard. And a couple of the users here have done their best to bring it back on topic but no sooner than that is done its away again.

But every single thread in the Sligo forum now seems to degenerate into a free for all. This is not Bebo and certainly not a chat room - its a discussion forum.

The next time I see threads going off topic Im going to delete, lock and ban. Dont say you haven't all been adequately warned.

Now please bring this back on topic and just have a wee think before you post.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,640 ✭✭✭Gillie

In fairness the Clarence is a music Venue so that's why DJ's are being discussed here.

What we need are people to choose more broad titles for threads to avoid going off topic.

And here was me thinking it was a hotel.

Where do we start and end here - its a hotel ffs. What next - start naming and talking about the chamber maids or the bar man. I have no problem with people discussing the hotel (as per thread title) and all its functions including a night club but I am not going to allow discussion on individuals who work part time or whatever in the premises regardless of their function.

This thread is just an example of whats been happening right across the forum As I said above - please have a wee think before posting. I take your point about posting a broad thread title but really and truly that wouldnt be necessary if people would just think in advance.

I dont have a problem at all with threads going off topic temporarily because it happens everywhere but I expect the regulars here, in particular, to pull it back on topic at the first given opportunity. Im not trying to be dictatorial here and hopefully none of you will view my comments as such but we do have to keep some form of control.

I have to say the Sligo forum is flying so to speak and thats down mostly to you, the users. Keep up the good work but ditch those bad habits :)

The hotel is a very small part of the business and has been for years. It's mainly a music venue/nightclub. Even so, it's always been called the Clarence Hotel. In fairness, seeing as most of the posters live in Sligo, the accomodation aspect isn't of much interest to them. I think it only had 10-12 rooms anyway.
I agree alot of threads have wandered off lately, but I think this one has stayed with the whole nightclub/entertainment thing.

    il gatto wrote: »

It has and it hasn't. The thread started fine and was going along nicely and I had no problem at all with people discussing the night club aspect of the hotel but then the topic moved to discussing individual dj's which is where a line had to be drawn. If this was allowed to continue without intervention then God knows where it would have ended.

This is nothing personal and Im not getting at anyone in particular and bear in mind that I am only using this thread as an example of what has been happening recently right across the Sligo forum.

We wont fall out about it and I really appreciate the couple of fair and "rant free" comments that have been posted in response to my scolding (for want of a better word ;) ). Myself and nanook need feedback like that to help develop an acceptable level of moderation of threads.

Jesus, this place is a bit wild - The Clarence Hotel is predominantly known as a nightclub and known as the only clubs in the town that doesnt play commercial/mainstream dance music - therefore the indentity of which particular DJ will be playing is very important because each DJ has his/her own style.

I dont think I will be posting on this section of the forum again in a hurry as its a bit draconian

next I'll be pulled up on me spellin

    Lighten up mods!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,663 ✭✭✭JoeyJJ

I know im guilty sometimes and sorry but Sligobhoy summed it up perfectly, the clarence dj back a few years ago meant a totally different night - Sat and one of the midweek days was Dance music, Friday for a while was World music, Tues and Sunday was Alternative music so it was a discussion to see if some of our favourite nightclubbing expierences in sligo would be back in the upgraded "hotel".

With so much traffic in the sligo formum is there a sligo mod?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 712 ✭✭✭GG66

I agree with sligobhoy to an extent. The Clarence is mainly known as a music venue/nightclub, I spent a large part of late teens early twenties nights out there. With a nightclub most night every week no one in their right mind would have stayed there (hence it was occupied by clubbers who had travelled to Sligo for the club (in the most part).

For the last while, anyone talking about the Clarence re-opening in Sligo is interested in what the music venue will be like, not the bedrooms. The Clarence was always an alternative option for a night out and a lot of people are craving for something different to the usual..toffs, velvet etc.

Which DJ is playing is of Major interest to me and I was reading with interest to find out until muffler went off topic ;)

I know where muffler is coming from though, calling individuals "Waldo" or a sell out for playing mainstream in another club could be taken in the wrong way...and there's no need for it.

Since which DJ is playing is as relevant to me as the standard of the bedrooms, who is playing in the Clarence Nightclub as DJ?

Has anyone checked out a band there, what are the acoustics like? I hear there are 3 floors, is it the same music on each one?

bloody hell what's going on here. as far as i can see muffler all that was happening was a few people talking about dj's. you seem to have pulled this even more off topic.

i like posting in this forum and really don't see what all the fuss is about. any thread on a forum is always going to veer off topic in my opinion.

anyway i think it's open from tuesday to sunday. might head down there tomorrow night to check it out :-)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,206 ✭✭✭gustavo

Especially one about a club re-opening after a few years closed, people are bound to reminisce about times they had there and the people that were there and what they are up to now

If you read my other posts you will see my answer to that and also that I was using this thread as an example of where people are going wrong.

Yes I agree and again you will see my thoughts on that.
    Rozbeef wrote: »

I have? So you would rather I locked it rather than try to get people to go back on topic again. An input from any mod on any forum and in any thread is not deemed as pulling anything off topic.

Has anyone thought of starting a thread about night clubs and dj's. If they did its a problem solved.

    JoeyJJ wrote: »

I have requested (and nominated) a mod for the Sligo forum but its up to the admins.

Don't want to appear like we're ganging up on you here Muffler, Mods are needed and appreciated but you are being just a bit  strict on this one.

It's a hotel with a nightclub, restaurant, accommodation....

The DJ playing there will determine the type of music served up to customers.
Are we allowed discuss the type of food served in the Restaurant?
Are we allowed to discuss the standard of accomodation offered?

It's all part of the hotel's service!

No one else seems to think its off topic...

Budge is tall and wears glasses. I don't know how calling him "Waldo" could be taken wrong, unless Waldo is being charged with war crimes and I haven't heard. He's a very nice guy and I wasn't insulting him. He's a gentleman, with excellent taste (same as mine;)) in music.

i was talking to mark connolly who used to do the alternative thursday night, and he said he's in talk to dj once a month as he's now living in dublin.

it'll be a band followed by a dj set.

one of the first bands lined up is dry county, i'm well impressed:D

Fair enough, and I agree! I was just trying to figure out what the mods objection was as I didn't see the thread as off topic.

Band followed by decent DJ music set is what Sligo needs. I moved back to County Sligo 3 years ago and the only thing I miss about living in a City is access to decent live music. Hopefully the re-opened Clarence Hotel will sort it out.

Not familiar with Dry County, is this them? http://www.drycountyband.com/

No gig listings but their site is here in a very incomplete state http://clarencesligo.ie/hotel.html

I've heard from another DJ in town that their club nights will be mainstream but they will have bands and I've also heard there will be alternative nights. So until the Sligo rumour mill turns into something definite I'm not holding my breath for regular live music. But it does sound promising

I'd love it if they got bands in. I used to love going to the Leitrim when they had bands playing (and only when they had bands playing) but they have stopped. Does anyone know what type of license they have. Is it a pub or nightclub?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,589 ✭✭✭Hail 2 Da Chimp

What a load of bollox, queued for about 30 mins, they let a load of teenagers in, then there must have been a bunch on 'VIPs' as about 15 other people skipped ahead of me right when I was at the door, they closed the doors then.
I was hoping it would be the same bouncers working there (as they wouldn't have let any kids in) but looks like it's the guys from the Left Bank.

    Anyone actually get in?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,152 ✭✭✭lubie76

Yes, i had an excellent night there Saturday. Music was brilliant thanks to the excellent Roger B. House but not too hard! The crowd was a little young but you know what who cares as everyone was enjoying themselves. Will be going back regularly for sure. It's about time Sligo took itself out of the dark ages music wise and realised it is a city and that there should be music choices to suit all tastes and ages. All we need now is a good live band venue at the weekends.

H'actually this was the subject for much of our conversation Sat night, is the Clarance going to hold any live music nights or was that just for Sligo Live?
