Just heard the end of a radio advert for it, and i thought I heard it say Ford Cortina 1600E

    http://www.motorbase.com/vehicle/by-id/1302/

Would love to find out how to see this class car if I did that correctly...

    Folks,
Anyone care to throw up rough directions to this event, kinda from the RedCow end of things, I'd be much obliged. Some beautiful looking cars there.

    Thanks,
    D.

    Sure Danny.

The event is held at Country Crest Potatoes (Hoey's Farm) in Rathmooney, Lusk, Co Dublin.

    1. Take the M50 northbound and exit onto the M1 northbound.

    2. Leave the M1 at the Donabate interchange - that's the second exit after the airport.

    3. Take the 3rd exit at the roundabout and head northbound on the R132 (that's the old N1 Belfast road).

    4. Keep going straight at Blake's Cross (Esso filling station on left).

    5. About a mile north of Blake's Cross you will come to a public house on the right - Murtagh's of Ballough. Turn right here.

    6. The venue is about a mile up this road.

Should be a lot better tomorrow. I only spent about 45 minutes there today and was gone at 3pm but I met loads of classics still coming in!

Allow me to indulge myself in the best and rarest classic by far there today - this Mercedes Benz 911B tractor unit. It is the only one ever sold in Britain and is owned by McGuinness Transport of Rush, Co Dublin.

(I know the classic car lads hate this but tough shít - I deserve it after spending half the night posting cars. At least I'll post the tractors in the Farming Forum :D)

I was looking out for that but there was no sign of it yesterday. Perhaps it will be there today.

Those 3 MkIIs were the only Cortinas that I could see. No Mk I or IIIs.

IIRC, that Merc truck used to be owned by a motor distributors in dublin, and was used to transport cars from the docks. It was operated on trade plates hence the ZV reg.

I saw 1 Mk III there today, it was a black 2 door, but it was parked over by the tractors. There were some nice cars there today, the day dried up and lent itself to a nice walk around. My car of the day was the Granada 2.8i X, beautiful car, also liked a gold coloured Mk III Escort 1.6 Ghia auto, immaculate.

Will have a look, thanks, I'm defo a Ford head. Was disappointed there was only 1 MkII RS2000 in Fingal today, it had a cage in it and was lowered to way too low to the ground, :( I still haven't recovered after seeing it!

I went to the show on Sunday afternoon, the mud was unreal ! Cars getting stuck both coming and going !

Someone should ahve puts straw down !!

The standard of cars was terrific though, lots I hadn't seen before, and tyat Merc truck was breathtaking, as was the Hino FD with the Fiesta Mk1 on the back !

Serious amount of money spent on those commercials and it was great to see them ! Old truck really bring back childhood memories !

This Show gets better each year, with plenty to see and plenty for the kids to do !

The Road Run for members on Staurday was supposed to be very good as was the barndance. I intend to be at both next year without fail !

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 723 ✭✭✭3ps

I decided to pop along at the last minute and was still let in the show my car. I was stuck behind a Lincoln Towncar who was stuck in the mud.

The mud was something else alright... had to take the wheels off and power wash the bottom of the car when I got home.

My son really enjoyed the tractor pulls!!

There was an awful lot of Fords/Austins etc etc which I'm not really into but I enjoyed it overall.

I wouldn't have minded at all. I just had the bonnet up to show the difference between a fulvia and all the other 4 pots in that field. There are people out there that believe volkswagen invented the narrow angle v4.
there were very few people there on saturday. I went along with a mate who was trying to sell his mk1 scirocco

.........which VW had a narrow angle V4 ?

Ford and Saab used V4's too, who was first ?

I don't recall VW having a narrow angle V4 either...

The German Ford V4 wasn;t really a narrow stroke engine, introduced in 62 and I think Saab licensed the V4 engine from Ford and they started fitting the 1.5 V4 in their 95/96's and later 99's from 1967 onwards.

Lancia are the true pioneers of narrow angled V4's with their first fitted in the Lambda of 1922 !!!! The narrowest they were ever made was at an angle of just 10 degrees in their Appia from 53. The Fulvia engine is 13 degrees.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,266 ✭✭✭MercMad

Yeah I recall some link between Saab and Ford on the V4's, my fathers 1971 Capri Mk1 2000GT was a V4.

It seems rather strange that Lancia, or anyone else, would try a narrow V4 instead of a flat 4 !

Sorry, I meant vw's vr6. It was more the concept of the narrow angle v that I was referring to. I'm not sure, but I think they also produced a vr5 at some point.

    My apologies.

tyney - your engine did look sweet though!

(What was the significance of the '1965' plate. Presumably nothing to do with engine date?)

Are you sure the 2000GT was a V4, Ben???
To my knowledge the German V4 was only ever as a 1.3, a 1.5 and a 1.7 and they were never fitted in UK/Irish cars. These got the Kent straight 4's, as a 1.3 and 1.6. The 2000 was the Cologne V6 and not a V4.

I think as per 1970, the 2.0 Pinto engines were used, but these were straight 4's...

Lancia was a pioneer in those days and they always tried out unconventional things, even the suspension on the old Lamba was revolutionary...

No definitely a 2.0 V4, UK built I think. I still have the owners manual for that car which covers the GT models 2000 V4 & 3000 V6.

It may have been a UK/RHD thing...........the 3000 was a German Motor AFAIK and not too many RHD ones I would say !

You're right Ben, it was the Corsair V4 that was used in the UK 2000GT. I somehow missed that ....

The 3000 was the Cologne V6.

The engine had just been rebuilt. It took me hours to shot blast and polish that rocker cover while I was waiting for the pistons to arrive, and the other shiny or painted bits were done while waiting for valve stem seals, or carb kits, or head gasket, or various other bits ordered off e-bay. It's amazing what you will polish while you are waiting for the postman. Anyway, I use the car as my daily driver, so the engine is filthy again, and will probably never be as clean as you saw it.

I never noticed the plate before, but I'll check it out. I have a spare one from another car, so i'll compare them.

Not to nitpick or anything, but the Cologne V6 came in 2.3, 2.6 and finally 2.8 injection flavours. It was the Essex V6 that was a three litre. it also came as a 2.5 in the mk 4 Zephyr/Zodiac, and a few of the very first mk 1 Capri GT's.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,733 ✭✭✭✭corktina

cologne ALSO came in 2 litre V6......

...........yes of course ! I forgot about the Essex V6, but I felt that the RHD cars did have a different range of engines to the German cars !

a 2 litre! I wasn't aware of that one. was it fitted to the Taunus?? That must've been the smallest displacement V6 until Mazda brought out the 1.8l in the MX3. (I like Engines!!!) one thing we can agree on, i hope, is that V6s make a lovely sound!!!
