    HI,
Just got a new Mac in work and since this morning I can't get anything to load on Safari.
Have to warn you all that I am completely new to Mac's so can't give you much info.
I can ping ok but when I try to load a site I am getting "page cannot load because server stopped responding" or something like that.
    Anyone any ideas?
Sorry about the sketchy details but as I said this is all new to me.
    Cheers.
    Sham

Hi and welcome to the Mac Forum firstly.

    Obvious questions first :

    1. What Mac model do you have ? i.e. Macbook, iMac etc.

    2. What type of internet connection do you have ? Home broadband, company network, dial-up modem ?

    3. How is you Mac connected to these connections to the Internet ? Cat 5 ethernet cable connected directly to a broadband router/modem, wireless connection to router etc.

These would help us to help you.

    Sorry,
    Macbook pro
    Company Network
Cat 5 connection to a patch panel through firewall etc.

Just noticed that one of the local test sites is working but others arent and I can't connect to any live sites.
    Cheers.

Ok so. From the Systems Preferences panel select the Network icon.

There may be several interfaces listed here one of which will be
"Built-in Ethernet". Double click this to reveal it's properties and select DHCP from the top drop down menu in that panel under the TCP/IP tab. Apply that and see if that helps.

Also check whether your company has employed a Proxy server to control access to the 'net. If they have you will need to enter it's details under the Proxies tab in this panel.

A further test is to go to /Applications/Utilities/Network Utility and try a Lookup on boards.ie this will check your connection to a valid DNS server and prove external connectivity.

Let's know how you get on.

Using a proxy and its setup ok.
Did a lookup and it seems to have been successful.
    Anything else I could try?
    Thanks

Strange, are you sure your computer has picked up an i.p. address ok and that it's in the correct network range ? Again in the Network Utility app select the 'Info' tab and from the drop down menu select the ethernet port - usually en0 - and check that the i.p. address matches your network. something like 192.168.x.x or 10.0.x.x may be valid.

After that and again from Network Utility use the 'Traceroute' tab to find google.ie or boards.ie and see where it stops. Can you collect POP3 email in the Mail by the way ?

just a thought - is the proxy password protected???

For large parts of the day i'm behind a password protected proxy and the only way i can reliably connect is by using an app called Authoxy.

Basically it acts as a local proxy......in your network prefs you set the proxy as 127.0.0.1 port 8080, and in the Authoxy PrefPane you put in the real proxy settings, username and password. I know you should be able to do this is the normal network PrefPane, but for some reason mine won't retain usernames and passwords.

    No password for the proxy.
Did a trace and it seems to be going straight out to the net or else its not working....
    I am completely lost.
Thanks for all your help and patience people.

Is the proxy compulsory ? What if you remove those settings ? Can you post the results of the Traceroute and of Lookup when using boards.ie. I presume you're using another computer to post here from the same network, open a dos box or command prompt >Start > Run > cmd and enter ipconfig /all and post the results here.

Also, what kind of network do you have ? If it's a windows network can you see the other workgroups around you ? Click on the Network icon on the left of a Finder window (d-click on the hard drive) Local workgroups should be visible.

Also where I work the sysadmin has to permit your MAC address before you can connect to the network - most Cisco switches use this. Have you spoken to the Network Administrator ?

    Thanks all,
Looks like someone took DHCP off and the firewall rule was setup for the static ip.
Still waiting for confirmation from one of the tech guys.
    Will keep you posted.
    Cheers.
