    Folks,

We are just starting to build our house and I noted that we are going to be part of a public water scheme. How do I go about getting access to this water scheme in my local area?

Is this a council scheme or a group water scheme?

Just pop into the local council offices and ask for forms for making a domestic water connection (maybe road opening also). Its a fairly straight forward procedure.

You'll need to apply to the council early on because it can take ages. Also if you have to pay a building levy to the council in your area they won't look at you water application unless your levy payments are up to date.
Make sure you write your planning permission reference number on the back of all maps you send in because they lost one of ours.
Our builders also had to apply for a road opening licence to put in water, electric and phone.

Not sure if thats right or not. The way it works in Donegal is that the application for the water connection is processed and an invoice is issued for the cost but also including any development contributions that are owing.

So essentially the application for the connection is approved but they wont actually give the connection until such time as ALL outstanding fees/contributions are paid.

It may vary though depending on what area you live in.

Our local council is Fingal (Co. Dublin). We received a letter stating that our application for water connection had been 'objected to' as there was a levy payment outstanding. Our levy is payable in 4 stages.
Co. Councils differ but it's worth checking out in advance.
