Learning Flash

Myself and my partner are interested in learning Flash for the purpose of providing more impressive web based front end systems. We have a good background in software development, and more recently have attended courses in Photoshop & Illustrator. Their seems to be no courses offered (in the Galway area) for Flash 8 (or Flash at all for that matter).

What we want to know is (from those of you already well versed in Flash), what's the best way to learn. We both have found that learning programming languages from a book is far easier than trying to teach yourself graphics skills using tools such as photoshop and illustrator. For example it was to us anyway much more valuable to have someone who is a qualified graphics design tutor teach us about graphics design and using the software as tools, as opposed to burying our heads in a book and coming out the other end merely knowing how to find less obvious features. Is the same applicable to Flash in your opinion. I have lost count of the number of times I have been in a bookshop with the likes of "Flash 8 Bible" in my hand and have felt reluctant to make a purchase.

So firstly, do you know of any courses available in Galway?

do you know of any good online courses available?

Can you recommend a good book that will compliment our skills with programming and other adobe products. It's terrible because we have access to Flash software, we can see how it would be useful for what we want to do, yet we have no efficient way of learning it. It seems quite abstract from anything we've seen before, but then again I would be willing to put that down to the fact that our self learning approach to date has left us somewhat bewildered.

In galway ... and don't know of any good courses ... that said I've also not looked ...

I'd recommend you check out lynda.com ... if you can spend a few quid .. 20 ? or 50 a month ... and can make the time you can get a hell of a lot of a return using lynda tutorials ...

I'm self taught ... and wouldn't be an expert and wouldn't be good with flash ... I can get things done with it when needs be ... and have done a fair bit of actionscipt in it

My recommendations ... get a good book ... join up with lynda for a month and see how you are getting on ...

I think a course will only take you so far ... its mostly down to ****ing about with it yourself and having the time to

    http://www.cartoonsmart.com/

I'm pretty sure that's the URL. My friend learned flash from this website and it's pretty good. The first few video lessons are free but then you only have to pay for the ones you want. He does packages like menus, games and animation... It's pretty good, as far as I know. This guy certainly knows his stuff. Oh, and it's all videos so there's no boring theory stuff.
