New clubs - where to start?

    Hi Folks,
I'm been playing golf on and off for about 14 years. I used to have a 15 handicap, then I went to Uni and it all fell apar, as I stopped playing.
I'm looking to get back into it again, and buying a decent set of clubs is my first move. I'm mainly looking for irons for the time being.

I'm looking for good size heads with graphite shafts.
    I'm 5'8".

I have no idea where to start to look.
I'm thinking along the lines of TaylorMade, Callaway etc.
I'm going to give myself a budget of about €500 for the irons.
    Suggestions welcome!

    Cheers,
    Steve.

The mizuno mx 19 irons could be worth a shout. They are in american golf just now for between 500 and 600 euro i think! graphite shafts on them!

They are 450 euro with steel shafts.

The Callaway and Taylor Made irons will generally be 600 euro upwards. american golf do have the big bertha 6 irons on sale for just under 600 euro though.

Would you consider second hand or ex demo!?

Winter is coming up so you may get a sale on or a good deal somewhere!

I'd prefer to get new set really. The ones I have at the moment were bought second hand, and well, I just want to own them from new.

I was thinking about these ones:

I'm just wondering if there are specific things to be looking out for?

    Steve.

Actually, I'm thinking these might be better:

they are grand irons. any of the main brands do good irons. What you really need to decide is how big of a head do you want and whether you want ultra game improvement, game improvement, or a 'player' type of iron.

By the sounds of it you are looking for a game improvement to ultra game improvement iron. Something like the callaway big bertha or x-20, the TM RAC OS you linked or one of the newer versions or something like the mx-19 mentioned above, i started out with the mx-17s and they were great irons.

You really need to go in to a few shops and see what suits your eye, you will also find the even if irons are marked as 6 or 700 you'll get at least 100 or so off if you haggle. You will get nearly any callaway set for less than 600 in Mcguirks for instance.

Go to celbridge driving range Mcguirks or Portmarnock Driving range golfworks and try out the latest irons. A friend of mine did this so at least you get to try them out first.

I'm in Antrim. I don't know of any places up here which would let you do the same.

    Oriel,

I believe Peter Hannah at Fortwilliam will let you try. Maybe I'm wrong but give him a ring at Fortwilliam.

Premiergolf are selling Wilson Staff DI6 irons for €299 if you trade in any set of irons against them (€200 for your old set). They have steel shafts.

I tried them last night and they are a great set of irons for the beginner to intermediate golfer.
