    erseys to be numbered from 2008
    by Brian Murphy, 22 September 2007

    Inter-county jerseys will have numbers printed on both the front and the back from next season.

    The move could herald the end of referees having to ask players to turn around to show their number's after thay are booked.

    The new rule will be enforced from the satrt of next season, but only inter-county teams will have to adhere from the start of next season.

    The issue was discussed at Congress in April but the GAA decided not to implement the rule until 2008 as most team jerseys had already been designed.

    Seems pointless enough to be honest, like its not too much trouble to turn around so that the referee can see the players number.
    Looks like new jerseys all around so next year.

    Couple of points on that;

    It will speed up the play where a 'ticking' is involved, the ref won't have to hold up play to get the players number so frees can be taken quickly.

    Also, on the "new jersies all round" thing, none of the replica tops have numbers on them to start with so I don't think there is any need to issue new designs just to accommodate what will be a relativley small number. The number on the front won't be allowed to block the sponsors logo.

    I thought it was a good idea. It makes sense to speed up the play. It will certainly help in a situation where the linesman informs the referee of an incident, the ref wont have to be running up to a load of different players asking what number they are.

    I dont think it will make a huge difference really. I cant see the frees being taken much quicker than they are already. Usually the ref has a word with the player as he takes the number so i dont think it will impact the game too much. I suppose tho, if it speeds it up even by the smallest amount, why not do it.

    Seems like a good idea alright, but hope its not a big ignorant number, maybe on the chest or someit

    Sounds good. One thing that needs to be addressed is the colour combinations of some numbers and shirts. On some it can be hard to see the number.

    I'd say it will look quite similar to the numbers DCU have on their jerseys.

    What next, player names to appear on the back of jersies?

    It might help the ref to indentify players in mass scuffles / brawls. Too often we see 30 man brawls and only one person gets a booking at the end...
