It would be interesting to hear opinions on both Dubs and non Dubs on this one.

I think centre half back is the most important position on a football field.
While Bryan Cullen is an accomplished footballer, I don't believe he is the answer to Dublins centre half back situation. He is good on the ball, has good distribution and is mobile enough for the position howver I don't think he is a good enough 'stopper' in the true tradition of a good centre half back. I don't think Cullen got his shoulders in as often as the likes of McGeeney did. I just don't think he's physical enough for that position. I do think he'd be a perfect centre half forward though.

I'm not familiar with the Dublin club scene so I don't know if there is another possible replacement at chb good enough. Has Shane Ryan been tried there?

Personally I think Cullen is a better forward and could be a Brian McGuigan type. I think the Dubs badly need a player like this to boost their AI chances for next year.

I think hes a fine centre back, the reason why he is not a half forward is because he is better at half back. shane ryan could do a job there but he is more attacking focoused. I think there may be one or two challengers to the half back position but I disagree with you about not being physical enough. No issues there imo. His main problem is positioning and organising the defence. Needs more leadership development I think.

Well, i would agree that at times we have seen players run right through the centre of our defence for easy points but i would agree with Alany that its a positioning problem moreso than physicality. For a period against Derry, they looked superbly organised and pushed Derry out to the sideline with nowhere to go on many occasions but at times there is a big gap in the centre also. I think pulling Ryan out of midfield would be a mistake. He has a huge impact in there with Whelan and they read eachother very well so i wouldnt mess with that at the moment.

hmmmm, now with only 1 or 2 posts left, how am i gonna waste my 1,000th post :D

Tbh I think he is one of your more consistent players, he has the height, pace and power to play the position, I cannot really think of a match where it could be said he has let the Dubs down?

Why is there rumours his place could be in doubt?

if i was an opposing manager id be delighted to play the dublin team with shane ryan at #6 , that means all his good work would be missing at midfield. play i dont think he has propper skills for a center back.
i think the OP just like the idea of a big centre back that mills all oposing players that come near him.......
modern game has long evolved from that...
