Ballybofey masts

Two of the masts in the photos have been in place for a few years now in the townland of Edenmore, outside Ballybofey in Donegal. The one numbered 1 in the photos is a recent construction very close to one of the existing masts.

No doubt they are used for a variety of purposes but can any of you technical people shed any light on what the various antennae are for?

    Can looking things = microwave
    Pole looking things = mobile

For the most part that seems to be it... you could check the location against Comreg's Sitefinder to see what masts are on that hill.

I know Vodafone and O2 are both listed for the site, but RTE also have at least one relay transmitter here according to their website.

I'd be interested to know if the new mast is connected to RTE work or the mobile operators.

Mast number 2 seems to hold the UHF TV relay. I'm trying to look for the FM transmitting aerials but I can't see them. Just above halfway up the mast I can make out the RBL aerials for (from top to bottom) the VHF Band III aerial for RTÉ 1 & 2, the VHF Band II aerial and the UHF aerial for TG4.

The aerials on mast 1 could be for FM radio but is inconclusive.

Mast 3 seems to be mostly GSM aerials though I do see a microwave horn aerial.

I was never aware of there bieng one there, that would explain the UHF aerials on Mast 2 (the top circular ones), and there are FM antennae barely visible that lawhec has noticed on the same tower. That would be "their" tower then.

Mast No.2 is RTÉ's existing Ballybofey FM Radio and UHF Television relay. The Band II FM aerials can't be seen as they're on the far side and are obstructed by the cables that are running up the mast.

Mast No.1 is also RTÉ's, and is a new structure that's due to replace the existing mast (No.2).

BTW, they are actually 'towers' as they are free-standing, whereas 'masts' are stayed. ;)

You can see better in the side view of no. 2 attached.

I figured it was so close it must be a replacement. Do you know if it will mean any change or upgrade to services?

There are four stacked FM Radio dipoles on the mast, of which three are visible in the last photo.

All masts have a finite lifespan and must be replaced in time. I don't know how long RTÉ's has been there but I'm sure it must be at least 25 years. The replacement shouldn't result in any changes for the viewer/listener.
