Vote here for Album of the Week

After losing the will to live going back through the big suggestions thread (now locked) and trying to pick a new album of the week, I've decided to adopt the same procedure as is in place on Rock/Metal (their voting thread is here for those interested). Basically the rule is simple and is as follows:
    1. One vote per person per week, either a new suggestion or backing up a previous suggestion.

At the beginning of each week (I'll try and do my duty every Monday morning) I'll create and sticky the new album of the week. The voting begins again from scratch (I'll post in this thread to mark the beginning of a new ballot).

Hopefully people will pick a nice selection of old and new albums and, just so there's no repetition, here is a link to the previous albums of the week.

Let the voting commence! (voting closes Monday morning, short introductory vote)

    dEUS - worst case scenario

Considering there's only 5 votes so far, I'm extending this til next Monday. However, I'll check back later and if there's any more support for deus I'll stick that up.

My vote goes to "A Walk Across the Rooftops" by The Blue Nile - an album of haunting music, if ever there was one.

    'Tallahassee' by the Mountain Goats.
Fantastic album, a litany of pessimism, frustration and despondency... Beautifully endearing portrait of a dissolved marriage, told - or rather sung - through the eyes of the resigned, miserable protagonist. An oddly uplifting and upbeat album though - and I'm pretty sure that that emotional confusion is intentional as well!
    Love it.

Considering it's now a tie between Kitt and deus, I'll leave it until next Monday morning. You'll all just have to sweat it out :)

It was actually a 3 way tie, but I have no doubt that sense will prevail and the votes for Kittser's masterpiece will come flooding in between now and next Monday.

Actually, have there been any Irish artists featured in the AOTW so far? Now's your chance people!! ;)

    So it was, my bad!

And we've had two Irish bands for AOTW: My Bloody Valentine and Ten Past Seven. More are very obviously welcome!

im in for At The Drive-In - Relationship of Command

plus it's easily the best album released in the lifetime of albums, and music as a whole.

This week John I'm going for Live - Throwing Copper

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57 ✭✭Flattery

My vote goes to the ever-astonishing Astral Weeks by Van Morrisson, an album of floating mysteriousness, ethereality and beauty unrivalled in anything else I have ever listened to. Superb instrumentation and that voice. A twat he may be, but damn that boy could sing.

I was going to suggest one but i'll save it and cast my lot in with Astral Weeks, it is a stunning album...

I flipped a coin to decide this week's vote considering Van and B&S both got the same number of votes. OK, time for a new vote. You should know the drill by now.

    Leftfield Leftism

Not sure if it fits into this forum's category.. but it blew my mind when I first heard it, at a time when I was very much an indie kid.

I take it that the new AOTW format is going to be just old/classic albums? While I'm sure a lot of the album selections will be justified it'll be a shame if a lot of the newer stuff doesn't make it in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

No, I really don't want it to be just classic albums so please, please make a few suggestions for newer albums. Actually, I'm going to throw a vote out for PJ Harvey's White Chalk which is sublime.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,625 ✭✭✭✭BaZmO*

or In Rainbows for the the week that's in it?

**** yeah, talk about missing the obvious!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,625 ✭✭✭✭BaZmO*

The only reason why I mentioned it being just about classic albums is that it can get a bit boring talking about albums that everybody knows inside out.

I've actually picked up a couple of new albums from the AOTW thread that I otherwise probably wouldn't have known about.

Anyway, sorry I'm going way off topic.

Haven't heard In Rainbows yet so can't really vote for it...
But in the spirit of "newer" releases, I nominate Biffy Clyro - Puzzle

Can I vote for The Argument by Fugazi?

I haven't participated in this before so apologies if I'm getting the procedure wrong :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

It's ok, it always finds its way back on topic. I totally agree about people just discussing old albums and ending up patting themselves on the back for having deadly taste.

OK, went for In Rainbows for the obviousness. Voting starts again (and I throw PJ Harvey White Chalk back in the ring :)).

    Nada Surf - Let Go

Torn between that and The Weight Is a Gift, both fine albums IMO... But, judging by the reactions of my mates, Nada Surf are one of those bands that people either love or hate.

Best album of the year so far is Cathy Davey's newie Tales of Silversleeve.
Songwriting skills and an awesome voice...

I'll nominate Delorentos - In Love with Detail.

    Love this album..

The Decemberists - Her Majesty The Decemberists

Never even heard of Cathy Davey, I feel so out of touch and unhip...
