Wedding Proposal

I have heard of people who have been together for years, who plan to get married, but do not get engaged until 3 months before the wedding, so that they will not have a long engagement. If this is the case, then how do you propose to your future bride? You'll have no ring, as you will not be getting engaged until 3 months before the wedding. Do you book the romantic meal, and get down on one knee, with no ring, and look like a complete prat or what do you do? When do you ask for the fathers permission?

The reason I am asking is because my girlfriend and I have talked about getting married. It's enivitable, we have a daughter and a mortgage togther. We share everything, so it's like we're practically married.

We are a bit strapped for cash at the moment, so I cannot afford an engagement ring yet. It briefly came up in conversation that we could plan the wedding and get engaged when we get closer to the wedding date.

Whay do people think about this plan?
