Membership In Dublin

Can anyone recommend cheap memberships in Dublin? I know those two words don't really go hand in hand when talking about golf...

Looking to join somewhere to get a handicap, motivate myself/have an excuse to play more regularly and play in competitions etc. Don't want to be spending thousands or should I say that I don't have thousands to spend so it has to be a cheap enough option. Do any of the public courses have membership options?? My wife is from the West and we plan to move down there in the next few years so I'm not too worried about getting in somewhere for the long term.

As we are thinking about moving I've also thought about a distance membership somewhere in the West and just continue down the "pay and play" route until we move but not sure if this would be the best way to go. The only advantage I can see to this to this would be the possibility of converting my distance membership into a normal one but I'm not sure if that is possible??

Any ideas or suggestions are most welcome

    Cheers

Swords Open might be worth a call! Only one I have heard is cheap in Dublin.

I think distance membership in Cavan ( Not a bad course) is about 340pa ( Hour and a half from Dublin) or perhaps Ballahaddreen which someone told me is about 150pa.

If you dont mind play greens fees on top of membership then you have a couple of places.

The likes of Elm Green, Grange Castle etc.

You could also try Corballis. Last time I checked mambership was open and it's cheap.

Advantages: cheap, great location by the sea, 3 really great holes (3, 12, 16), links golf.

Disadvantages: Very short (Par 65/66?, 8 par 3s)

    12 and 16 great holes??

How do you make that out??

I think front 9 aint bad.

12-16 not great 13-15 are awful

I tried this before. Membership is closed at the moment. It is cheap but you have to pay as you play too. Nice course but not very difficult IMO, a lot of the holes are Up, Down, Up Down, ie they run alongside each. It's also very flat.

    Swords open
Corballis is a good bet playable all year around.

Thanks Lads. Had an e-mail from Elm Green saying they are opening memberships again in November - no price as yet though. Have played there a few times before and quite enjoy it. Not sure about Corballis. Only played it once and thought it was fine but I really didn't like the 3 holes that seemed to be in a field on the back 9 - not sure what numbers they were. Will contact Swords as well as I have played there bafore too and its grand as well.

    Cheers

I'm a member of the Christy O'Connor Golf Club in Silloge Park near Dublin Airport. Silloge Park is a public course run by Dublin City Council.
It costs €350 a year for membership and the green fees are €15-€25 approx for a round depending on when you play during the week. The club is fully GUI affiliated and once you've played your three rounds you will get a GUI handicap.

They have competitions every Tuesday morning and every second Sunday plus monthyl medal competitions as well as Captain's and President's Prizes.

It's not the most difficult course I've ever played but is kept in very good condition and is playable all year round. I joined last year with a friend and think its a great alternative to paying out thousands for membership.

i played there the week before last and i certainly enjoyed it, its kept quite well for a public course. I didnt like, however, the fact that they dyed the greens so my golf balls and putter were a dark green/blue colour until now actually.
There are a few really good out-and-out par 5 on the course which i liked, a some variation. it also doenst take too long to go around c3.5hrs for the 3 of us.

Yeah, you're right about the dye. I asked someone in the club last week about it and they told me it is for protecting the greens against weeds casued by the bad summer weather.

The par 5's are very good, particularly the 5th at 550 yards! If I play that hole well it usually means I playing very well.

Elmgreen membership was 450 euro this year. That included GUI fee and you also get a 35 euro voucher for the shop (or alternatively you can swap it for a jaggy arsed, cheap **** v neck club jumper... probably the worst golf jumper i've ever seen!) and 40 euro to spend in the restaurant.

It's a good way of getting your handicap and club competitions. I find the discounts pretty mediocre though and the green fees fairly expensive. Then again, i can't really play weekdays so i don't get the benefit of the reduced rates very much. A few of the ones who work up there are very rude too which is a pity.

A good option for you though Guisseppe... Hollystown is another decent option too!

What are the green fees like then as a member. I too would be a weekend player as I wouldn't have the chance to play midweek very often unless its a work society outing or something similar.
