So last year, a few boardsies (basquille?) were able to recommend new US shows to keep an eye on. Some fell by the way side (The Black Donelley's, Studio whatsit) some came over here (Heroes, Dexter, etc). How come there hasn't much similar talk this year yet? Still too soon?

Too soon - we've only seen pilots. None of the shows have started airing besides "Californication".
If you search back a bit, there's a four, or so, page thread where we discuss our favourite pilots. The only one we all agreed on (almost) is "Pushing Daisies" which we also all felt would be cancelled early on for being too quirky. Have a look at that thread.

Most the new US shows were talked about in this thread:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055124767

as a lot of the pilots were leaked online. When they've all started we should get a list together of the better ones.

    Pushing Dasies
    Reaper
    Chuck
    Sarah Connor Chronicles
    and surprisingly Bionic Woman

    all show promise

    Add Journeyman to the list

So far I have watched ..

Reaper - first one good, second one, meh - it could go either way
Chuck first one OK - will watch second one
Pushing Daisies great premise, I hope they nurture and develop it. Had a weird flashback of gazing at Anna Friel in Lillie's Bordello many years ago when Brookside were filming in Dublin

Have yet to watch Dirty Sexy Money - with Donald Sutherland and Peter Krause I hope it's good but US reviews have been mixed

The mot has watched Private Practice - also, meh.

I absolutely love Pushing Daisies. I dont know how it can really get a long run out of it, but I thought it was great. It's completely an either you absolutely love it, or really hate it kind of show though.

As a total guilty pleasure, and as a replacement for The OC I've been watching Gossip Girl. I love it, but it's clearly not genius television or anything. But it's entertaining.

Private Practice is awful. Apparently the second episode was better but I'm not really bothered to find out.

Some quick one - two sentence reviews:
    • Aliens in America - from the pilot.. bit too many racist jokes but it was enjoyable enough with the mother being the weak link in terms of performance (very OTT!)
    • Bionic Woman - enjoyed the pilot a lot more than i thought i would but we'll see how it pans out a few episodes in.
    • Californication - excellent. David Duchovny's performance (especially in the most recent episode) just gives me a whole new respect for the guy.
    • Chuck - great show. Daft, over-the-top but great fun!
    • Dexter - still fantastic. Michael C Hall better get an Emmy this year. He was robbed last year.
    • Dirty Sexy Money - this is good fun. Kinda a guilty pleasure in that it's like a better acted soap opera. Think of 'Knots Landing' / 'Dallas' and roll in a bit of 'Days of Our Lives'. And Peter Krause and Donald Sutherland are great.
    • Family Guy - the Star Wars episode was horrible and the second one was even worse.
    • Greys Anatomy - new season is "hella weak". Season opener was bad but the second one was just waaaaay too over the place. I got a serious headache while watching it. They seemed to cram in far too much in one episode.
    • Heroes - i really didn't enjoy the first two episodes of the new season much at all.. maybe a controversial one but they really need to step it up a bit.
    • House - brillant as always. House will rarely slip in terms of quality and Hugh Laurie's performance is worth viewing alone.
    • It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - 8 episodes in and apart from one or two shaky episodes, it's been hilarious.
    • Journeyman - i wasn't too fond of the pilot but the second episode was actually very enjoyable and Kevin McKidd seems to know how to bring a great performance to it so it's once to watch.
    • K-Ville - lasted one episode with it. It was just too formulaic and just didn't feel like it was going anywhere.
    • Life - liked the first episode. Fell asleep half way through the second but i'm giving it another chance just because Damien Lewis is excellent.
    • Moonlight - not as bad as critics are making it out to be but still pretty meh.
    • My Name is Earl - good but it's hard to get used to the new location of the show. I won't spoil it for any non-viewers.
    • The Office - the first 40 minute episode was hilarious, second was not so much but very funny in parts.
    • Prison Break - OK.. just OK.. i think it's running outta steam really to be perfectly honest. I'll keep watching though.
    • Private Practice - woeful stuff. Why'd they change the ex-wife owner of the clinic from Merrin Dungey (Francie in 'Alias') to (what looks like) a trans-sexual? It's just creepy! But Paul Adelstein is watchable if anything else.
    • Pushing Daisies - from the pilot.. it's fantastic. Very different and nothing like we've seen before but unfortunately, Bryan Fuller's televisual visions don't seem to make it too far.
    • Reaper - top-notch stuff. Great cast, great performances and enjoyable scripts so far.
    • Weeds - good but not nearly as fresh and exciting as previous seasons.

Watched the first two episodes of Chuck, and was slightly unimpressed but the third episode brings all the good elements together and now I expect a lot of good things for the rest of the season. Prison Break and Heroes are both starting to lose steam for me, especially Heroes which I never really got into in the first place (much like Lost). Californication will be a must watch all season. :) Reaper was an ok pilot will probably watch the next one. Weeds, good first two seasons, this season is slowly losing the plot but still enjoyable.

    My 2c worth

    Journeyman

Thought that this was OK in the pilot but I am starting to find Journeyman watchable and agree on Kevin McKidd. He seems to be settling into the part well and his acting ability adds to it.

    Heroes

Not being a devoted fan of Heroes but having enjoyed most of the first season I have also found this pretty average and the Oirish accents are the worst I have seen in a very long time. Really distracting. That and the fact that it seems to be going nowhere slowly. Suggests a lot more studio control to me this season.

    30 Rock

I found this hit and miss in its first season and this season doesn't look like being any different. Funny in spots but the knowing comments and digs at US television, which might as well have been directly to the camera, take away from it. It's as if Tina Fey can't get away from the Saturday Night Live mentality. I wonder how long the show can carry what is effectively a bunch of complete neurotics.

    Grey's Anatomy

Yes a mess and doesn't seem to moving forward either. Could do with dumping the eponymous Ms Grey at this stage imo. As someone posted elsewhere , there has been zero development in her character and begs the question "why is she still there?".

    Private Practice

Also a mess and made me wonder why they bothered with idea apart from thinking that Kate Walsh was a comedy actress.
I have already given up on this tbh.

    Life

I liked ep 1 but ep 2 seemed to have turned into "just another cop show". A lot of the scenes were absolutely pointless and seemed aimed more at showing how brilliant but mad the character is. Pity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,439 ✭✭✭Skinfull

I watched Journeyman last night and I had to turn it off. the guy who played the main character apart from annoying me for no real reason was just too...hmm..annoying? the hwole jumping sequence wasnt strong enough and frankly I didnt really care enough about the characters to find out what happened. Turned it off after 20 mins.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,136 ✭✭✭✭is_that_so

Much as I think he is a good actor, McKidd has the same affect as me. He seems to take a good while to settle into things. Even in Rome he was just plain annoying for a couple of episodes. But when he does get into it he makes the role grow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,439 ✭✭✭Skinfull

I think it was the crappy accent that did it for me. Like House. Much as I wanna watch that show and it looks like the kinda show I'd love I cant get by Hugh Laurie's accent and how unnatuural it seems. *shrug* Fickle reason I know but it has latched onto my brain and I cant work away from it!

Although having said that I seem to have no problem with Damien Lewis in Band of Brothers (which I adored completely!) and the new show Life which had me gripped from the first 5 minutes in!

Just thought I'd comment on the latest installment of Life. What set out looking like an intriguing idea is now starting to slip alarmingly between two stools. Initially I thought they were going the Monk route, slightly weird lead but good dialogue and some clever ideas. Then it looked like they were going for the clever plot, clever dialogue approach.

Now all they seem to be doing is peppering fairly dismal storylines with "meaningful" dialogue. I was particularly put off by the latest
A preoccupation with coyotes that has nothing to do with the story. What was the really large Samoan carjacker doing with flash grenades? And then there is Damian Lewis' obsession with fast cars, never mind the ludicrous meeting with his ex-wife. Finally why does he have to do that bug-eye stare every time he's talking to someone?

Disappointed that a good idea seems to be slipping downhill extremely fast. Not sure that it will last.

life is decent enough i dont think its slipping you also cant really decide a show is slipping after only 4 episodes.

Wanna know whether your favorite freshman series is kicking butt—or about to get kicked out on its keister? Well, look no further!

Now, my dear friends, comes the fun part of the fall TV season: the moment when the overwhelming majority of new shows have launched (only Women's Murder Club, Viva Laughlin and Samantha Who? remain) and we start to get a clear picture of how the 2007-08 TV season is shaping up.

We've combined your votes from our Save It or Sink It Campaign with your comments and emails, the Nielsen ratings, critical reception and general buzz to produce a list of the biggest winners and losers of the new season. Your Save It votes appear in parentheses, so you can see the verdict from your fellow fans on what's watchable and what's not.

Read our take, and let us know if you agree or disagree in the Comments section below!
    Lee Pace, Pushing Daisies

ALREADY PICKED UP FOR A FULL SEASON

Gossip Girl (64%): The CW has already ordered a full season of episodes, and it'll probably be a keeper beyond that, what with major fan enthusiasm, a hot young cast and juicy storylines that fill the never-ending need for sexy teen-soap programming. Like Dawson's Creek and 90210 before it, Gossip should have a nice long run.

    HERE TO STAY

Pushing Daisies (80%): Our new favorite and yours, Pushing Daisies, got great premiere numbers (13 million viewers) and kept it going strong last night (10 million). Daisies is easily the most critically acclaimed new show of the fall, and it deserves to be a trophy contender when awards time comes around. Plus, it has more buzz than all of Fox's and CBS' new shows combined. This one is alive—for good.

Private Practice (47%): The most commercially successful show of the new season, Private Practice has the top ratings for newbies and is leading the pack when it comes to new shows on TiVo's Season Pass survey. There's no doubt Practice will stick around for a while, especially given Kate Walsh's popularity and ABC's existing relationship with Shonda Rhimes.
    Zachary Levi, Chuck

    LIKELY A KEEPER

Chuck (62%): NBC just ordered three more scripts, which is a good sign. Plus, Zachary Levi has charm to burn, the cast oozes charisma and the general reception has been quite positive. Still, the ratings are weakening noticeably each week. It will almost certainly get a full-season order, but the ratings slide needs to be halted in order for Chuck to survive its first season.

Life (28%): Also just received a commitment of three more scripts. Life is not quite a breakout, but it has all the makings of one. Though it was originally overlooked and underpromoted, we're rooting for it to become fall's sleeper hit! (P.S.: If you watched this series for the first time last night, give it one more shot. It wasn't the best representation of how good this series can be, IMHO.)

Cane (21%): CBS just picked up four more scripts of the hot and spicy Duques family. And with Viva Laughlin likely to be a dud and Moonlight and Big Bang Theory getting quiet receptions, this is the most likely of all the Eyeball net shows to stick around.

Reaper (56%): The ratings aren't quite spiffy enough for Reaper to be safe, but when the CW finds itself with a show that (a) appeals to the 18-49 demographic and (b) is one of the top-reviewed new shows of the season, it's not gonna go do something stupid like cancel it. Right, CW?

Dirty Sexy Money (44%): It premiered to about 10.5 million viewers two weeks ago, which isn't bad for the 10 p.m. time period it's occupying. Plus, time-slot competitors CSI: New York and Life are averaging similar numbers. Unfortunately, the Darlings lost close to a million fans on their second outing, and will have to prove they can hold the remaining audience's attention for the next few weeks. Though critics are generally happy with the series and creatively it shows promise, if the fans don't stick with it the assistance of Nick George ain't gonna do squat!

Moonlight (55%): From what we've seen, fan response to CBS' vampire-detective drama has been very strong, in no small part because it stars Jason Dohring. CBS has to love the ratings, which allow it (finally) to keep up the momentum in the bridge slot on Friday nights between Ghost Whisperer and Numb3rs. Also, it has Jason Dohring. Consider it a keeper.
    Michelle Ryan

    HANGING IN THERE

Bionic Woman (35%): Commercially, Bionic is doing fine—it's one of the highest-rated new shows of the season—but we're putting it here because audience reaction to the first few eps has been mixed, and there are also persistent rumors of behind-the-scenes and budgetary challenges. That said, it's from those Battlestar Galactica people (who know what they're doing), and it draws an appealing demographic. Bionic Woman should get a chance to work out the kinks in its system.

The Big Bang Theory (24%): Formulaic but funny, this sitcom from Two and a Half Men creator Chuck Lorre would win its time slot if Dancing with the Stars weren't in the way, and it fits perfectly into CBS' Monday comedy block. A good, easy-to-translate-and-syndicate comedy is hard to find these days, so Big Bang pretty much has it made.

Big Shots (58%): I don't love it, but many of you do. It has Michael Vartan. It doesn't do as well as lead-in Grey's Anatomy, but it has overcome a lot of bad buzz to perform acceptably. So far, not failing just might be enough to keep it around.

Aliens in America (47%): This surprisingly entertaining newbie is already reliably the lowest-rated thing airing on Mondays, which is not good (duh). However, luckily for America, the CW doesn't have a ton of promising replacements waiting in the wings, and it's also a hit among critics and a small but devoted fan base, which is why the network has already ordered a few more episodes. We're hoping this one sticks around.

Journeyman (33%): Despite an outpouring of support from fans and a pickup by NBC of three more scripts, Journeyman needs a lot more eyeballs in order to stick around. So, if you're a fan of this show, start spreading the word and harassing your friends into watching!
    Jerry O'Connell, Carpoolers

    AT RISK

Carpoolers (25%): Its premiere episode scored a nice 9 million viewers, with many most likely tuning in to check out its lead-in (the much talked about Cavemen). Unfortunately, even though the second episode was even better than the first, Carpoolers lost a lot of eyeballs this week and needs better ratings in order to stick around.

Back to You (28%): This show has officially premiered to a resounding "meh," as evidenced by lackluster ratings that have declined week after week. However, all that is probably trumped by Kelsey Grammer, Patricia Heaton and the fact that it is funny. Fox has every reason to be patient with it, at least until American Idol premieres in the spring.
    Cavemen

    TOTALLY SCREWED

Life Is Wild (29%): Low premiere ratings (only 1.2 million viewers), minimal buzz and the prohibitive costs of shooting on location overseas have probably already doomed the Clarkes and their pretty kitties...

K-Ville (19%): The ratings were nothing special to start with (5 millionish viewers), and they're on the downturn. It's in a tough slot opposite Heroes, Dancing with the Stars and Two and a Half Men. It's a generic buddy-cop show. Most of you wanted to Sink It. Consider it sunk.

Cavemen (13%): Hollywood was stunned when this comedy based on a series of insurance commercials about Cro-Magnon frat boys failed to connect with audiences. The curious started bailing after the first ep, and ratings have since been dropping like a Stone Age rock. The viewing public, man. So unpredictable!

Whoa.. what a truly shocking list. Who'd have thought programmes of this calibre would ever be in trouble of early cancellation?

Out of the list above.. i'm currently watching (weekly): Pushing Daisies, Private Practice, Chuck, Reaper, Dirty Sexy Money, Moonlight, Aliens In America, Journeyman, Bionic Woman.

And they fall into three categories:
    • What i really want to stay: Pushing Daisies, Chuck, Reaper, Journeyman
    • What i like but could live without: Aliens In America, Moonlight, Dirty Sexy Money
    • Ditch it now: Private Practice, Bionic Woman
Get rid of 'Bionic Woman' first... it's atrocious!
