Got my nice DVR from NTL back in August. Last couple of days the disk has been making a whining noise and last night it let out a loud screech and promptly switched itself off. Sounds like a nice little disk crash to me.

NTL think they might/maybe/possibly have a replacement one next week. Won't hold my breath.

There is some DVR's in stores for replacements(in my neck of the woods), so I shouldn't see why getting one would be problem.

Out of interest - did you record much stuff with the PVR? How much use did it get?

Actually we did use it a lot. The kids loved the "pause tv" option - meant they never missed a beat if someone came to the door etc. I used it for the Rugby and lots of other stuff. The disk is/was over 80% full if thats any indication!

Mine has started to currupt any recording over one hour, losing all data after the one hour point. Does the disk defrag or is this space lost forever! Plus it's making alot of noise!

So are the MMDS stores empty, or dont exist?

Not too sure theirs was always a separated place for MMDS and cable equipment.I haven't heard of any shortages. Mine is still going strong and I would have my the longest.

NTL AFAIK still has remote access to your hard drive. Maybe they could try to defrag or format it to see if it solves the problem.

Replacement units are in my neck of the woods too. Not to sure about remote controls though so make sure the dog doesn't eat it or the rug rat throws it down the toilet.:D :D

How is it that a company such as NTL/UPC are still in business. Engineer came out today to replace my dvr and guess what - he didn't have one. What are these morons up to? I called them to say my dvr was dead (wouldn't power up) and they arrive without a replacement DVR. And guess what - this is not the first time. When I was getting the original one installed the engineer came to the door and said "I'm here to install the DVR.... but I don't have one with me".

I'm stunned. Makes me just want to rip the whole lot out and go with Sky.

TBH I kinda saw this coming half the time what info the call centre gets is lost along it merry way. So I wouldn't really blame the Engineer. I haven't even heard of any of lads needing to swap one out yet.

Rubbish. Whats the point in asking for information if its not used. The old saying still applies - the hardest thing to do is get a new customer, the easiest thing to do is lose one. NTL customer service/Enginneers is a great example of how not to operate and how to fix something when its broken. All the engineer had to do was ask what equipment the customer had and stick a replacement in the van.

I agree with you its brutal customer service. I understand you gave all the info needed and it a very straight forward thing to swap it out. But by the time it makes it to the engineer it often ends up as saying something like no reception(most of the lost info is being cause by a contract call centre which is being looked into). The Engineer really though should carry at least one spare too for all product that are available.

One other thing to add a new PDA will be used by Engineer shortly which will give them direct access to the info you give so this type of situation shouldn't happen again. Also if your appointment is let say in the afternoon. The engineer will have planned his route on the PDA. So if you call to see when they are due, the call centre will be able to say your 3rd on list or so on.
