When giving references for past jobs and where your past superviser/manager/senior sales assistant has left - do you give the shop details or their mobile numbers (even if they don't work for the company any more)

If they're willing to be a referee, then should be no problem at all that they've left. In some instances, someone who no longer works for the company may be the only person who will give a reference depending on company policy. There's little point in giving the shop number if no-one there can vouch for you.

Ask the referee what contact details you should put down for them before you go giving out their personal details.

Yeah, should be a given that you get all the OK from whoever you're asking to act as a referee. Also, another call to let them know someone may be ringing shortly (i.e. you've got an offer, and given their details on).

Yah, I assumed it's common courtesy to check with the person to see if it's ok to give out their mobile number or whatever.

I'm right in thinking that it's not generally required if the person still works there though and you're giving the work number?

You should still give a heads up, so they're not caught off-guard if they get a call. You should only be giving the number when a job offer's on the table anyway. Check that the company doesn't have a problem with giving references.

Cheers for your thoughts lads. When you stay in a job for a while and don't deal with the day to day of management issues it's hard to get used to what the generally procedures are.
