After a couple of days getting used to the new camera I'm wondering if you can give me a few pointers from the pics I've taken.

It looks that I am only critical, but I am not critical, I like to motivate people.
So nice dog, nice pose, however the wood in the background looks like a spear going throught his throat. Maybe smaller DOF could help.
And the second one? Nice, but the brighter blossom is on brighter background. And the red one ends directly on edge between two tones of background.

One of the most complicated things about photography is to "see" the picture already in viewfinder.

I like both pictures, but they could be a little better just by making small side-step. Another step to perfection :-)

Difficult to tell from just two shots, i can take a bit of a stab at it - composition wise, it works well in both here as it happens but be wary of just sticking the subject constantly in the centre of the frame. Also, keep an eye out for your backgrounds. That's all I'd say though, these are lovely and sharp and punchy.

Thanks. Being in the back garden (and yes it is a mess!) I was restricted to what space I could use. Currently have a couple of books on order just to give me some advice too. The comment about having everything in the center is exactly what I'm guilty of, I tend to keep everything central without experimenting although if I don't experiment I won't get far :)

It's digital, so it doesn't cost you a thing (expect time ) to try out new stuff...

Is it the 400D with kit lens you have? I know it's going to be a struggle to get shallow dof but try it at a lower f number if possible, that should start to blur out backgrounds a bit more if you can't position yourself ideally. Or go and buy a 50mm f1.8 for a hundred quid, you won't regret it :D
