Big shocker at today's Electronic Arts pre Tokyo Game Show press event. While playing a demo of Burnout Paradise, we felt something that we never thought we'd feel from a PS3 controller -- shake!

That's right, Burnout Paradise is the first rumble-equipped PS3 game we've ever played. Which made us think at the time, if the game is making the controller shake, the controller must be a new version of the Sixaxis!

In fact, the controller we were using to play the demo looked exactly like a standard Sixaxis, except that it had a sticker on the bottom that said "RUMBLE." It also felt notably heavier than the standard Sixaxis.

We presume this is a prototype of the PlayStation 3's new rumble controller, whatever it's going to be called.

Hopefully it's Immersion's "next-gen" rumble, touchsense or whatever it's called. I guess we'll find out for sure tomorrow.

Forked out 50 for a 2nd Joypad, ain't doing it anymore, then again PES is out soon so i'll probably be needing a new joypad a few days after its release.

Thought this was a 'last gen' feature and would interfere with the motion sensing so was impossible to implement  Or maybe it's to do with the fact Sony finally settled with immersion out of court a few months ago.

I've been playing a few PS3 games since I got one recently and I have to say I do miss the rumble. Punches in fighting games feel flat and gun fire as well. Armoured Core feels a whole lot better on the 360 and eurogamer say it's why they would choose the 360 version of sega rally over the PS3 one. At least we will have it available for MGS4 and Silent Hill which were 2 series that always made the best use of the rumble feature.

anyone who believed it was an interference with the motion sensing was smoking some mad stuff...

as for the rumble itself, i haven't really noticed much of a difference bar the weight of the device itself... but i put that down to being a PC "gamer" too.

i am disappointed in it though. rumble? so what? where did "vibe" go? either way, as long as they don't charge €75 for a controller, i'll buy into it.

Everyone knows it was because they lost the law suit with Immersion Technologies and wanted to cut costs and no longer have to pay them royalties.

But the bad press and consumer demand, added to the fact that third partys like Logitech are just about to release wireless six axis controlers with rumble has forced Sony to drop the BS and just release the controller they should have released in the first place.

Lets hope they fix the sticky trigger buttons too.

    Sony are such idiots.

As soon as the nintendo revolution was announced, "we dont believe that motion sensing technology has a future". Out comes the sixaxis motion sensing controller.

As soon as they got into trouble over rumble rights, "we dont believe rumble is necessary". Now comes the sixaxis rumble!

    Here's the bad news folks

In light of its official announcement that rumble will be returning in the DualShock 3 next year, Sony Computer Entertainment has released a full compatibility list showing which titles (new and old) will be supporting the long-awaited feature.

And then the good (well at least for USA & Europe, Japan seemingly left in the cold)

Note: Pre-existing titles will be updated via software prior to the release of the new controller.

Yay! MGS woulda been weird without rumble!
If the Japanese ones come out this year why not just buy them? Bluetooth isn't region locked, so there's no reason they wouldn't work!

Sony weren't being stupid. They just know how stupid the majority of the public are and what they can get away with. For them they will take BS from Sony like 'Cell Processor' and no rumble as gospel while the minority on internet forums will vent and moan about being treated like idiots.

It's out in Japan in November and some time next year here. I bet they will launch it here around the same time as MGS 4.

Want some bitter cake with that?

Stop trying to broaden your arguments off topic also (i.e. "cell processor").

Sony was very honest when confronted about the back-pedaling on rumble at GDC. Words to the effect of "We were in litigation, what did you expect us to say?"

It could have been very easy for Sony to ignore rumble completely going forward and never offer it. Now that they are, that should be welcomed. It takes a bit of humility on their part to reverse their message on it in order to improve the product's quality, but they've been willing to do that.

Back to the topic at hand, I read one report where the author said that in speaking to developers, it sounded like it was 'next-gen' rumble - in that the developer was saying that they had a lot more control over the strength of the rumble with DS3, and they could localise the rumble more (e.g. so that the rumble's location in the pad better corresponds to the location of an explosion for example).

Why didn't they just say they were in litigation in the first place instead of spouting more sony BS? It was their own fault anyway, they dragged on an expensive lawsuit they had no chance of winning while Nintendo and Microsoft did the sensible thing and settled out of court years beforehand.

nintendo wasn't part of the litigation, but didn't microsoft not just settle the case, but buy shares in the company and give people jobs for life? it meant they paid less for the litigation settlement and got technology first... which ended up falling through anyway.

sony wanted to own the rumble technology they had. i'd say they saw nintendo's rumble and created their own, won patents on it and got a bit pissed off to see these guys wander in.

if immersion won the case against microsoft they'd pay a huge payment on the controllers sold. if sony lost their case they would have to pay a huge payment on PS2's sold, and then pay for every one sold in the future. that's why sony fought harder then MS. they'd be forced to pay more then MS, because MS bought into immersion.
