I'm not sure if this is the right place but i need a bit of advice.

I need a key for a door lock in work. Building services are being a pain in the ass and they say it'll take a few weeks to get it!!
If i go to a locksmith and give them the code off the lock, will they be able to provide me with the appropriate key. It's not a special lock that can't be duplicated or anything. It looks like a run of the mill door key.
Now, its a pretty big company: is the code specific to all the keys in that company or are the codes for all of those keys in the world?

PS I am not trying to steal anything:) ; the door is open, i just want to lock it so stuff doesn't go walkies.

Generally they won't do it for you unless you have an original key that they can copy from. I don't actually know that the code would be any good to you anyways.

Why don't you ring a locksmith annonymously to see?

    I've just remembered this thread.
I locked it earlier for a laugh, but forgot to unlock it.

Can someone please help the OP out?

bring in a screwdriver and take the lock to the locksmith?

I dont think (hope!) that the number will lead to a key, though maybe it would, for a low risk internal door...

It's possible to make a key if you know the brand and code (and have the manufacturers code-book), but a locksmith won't do it for you over the counter tbh.

To answer the question, yes a lock smith can do that. There's one Frederick street in a hardware shop that will do it there and then.

yeah its possible if you have the right code.

not every locksmith will/can do it though. i used to but it takes a specific machine. your other call as someone noted is to have it re-key'd.

pull the lock outta the door and bring it in. they should be able to change the combination and cut you a few keys

Will you not need the key to take the lock out.

Also i'd say buliding services would not be impressed if you removed a lock?
