Me for one. Where are you staying? I got a place in Trinity Hall so that'll be handy for getting to know my fellow students but don't worry about it, Freshers' week is all about getting to know loads of people.

Almost everyone. You'll make friends, don't worry about it. People have said how the easiest time in all of college is during Freshers' Week when you can talk to anyone about everything, because they are all in the same boat. Sure, some people will come into college and know people, but one part of the fun of college is how you have so many people here to interact with.

Go in on Monday in Freshers' Week, get talking to some people at the stands. Go on the Students' Union tours (not perhaps for the tour, but to get talking to people), and other tours for the same reason. If you're nervous, tell that little demon inside you to STFU, and you'll laugh in a year's time at how many people you'll know :)

    Freshers' Week, sir.

And it's about getting to know loads of people and then avoiding them for all of Michaelmas Term :D.

Hear hear. It took me a good six weeks or so to get to make friends in College but by the end of first year I probably had fifty phone numbers of people in College.

Don't worry about making friends :).

Don't get too worried about it.. I was in pretty much the same position when I started college.

Freshers week is great, each night there will be something organised by the various clubs (sports) and societies. These provide great opportunities to meet new people and also great opportunitites to score! (if you're single!)

Also, in the second week there are usually a number of orientation meetings (read pissups) that are held by clubs who got your details. For example, the Rifle Club will be holding a meeting in the Arts block where we go over what we do and the basics of shooting. This is followed by a free session in the range with all guns locked up, there is no shooting on this night where you can meet the new and existing members.. All in all a great night and a great way to meet new people.

Also, unless its changed dramtically over the last year, the first couple of weeks are pretty much open door in halls.. as in everyone is really friendly and parties abound. I remember carrying someone home from what was then redbox and ending up with a totally random group of people stealing booze from a person who ended up becoming education officer! Good night..

While this is the case in freshers' week, it does not end with it. The friends you'll make will be during the first few months of term. So don't cloister yourself and you'll be fine and dandy.

Question, can I fire my airsoft rifles in the rifle club. I've been a loyal member for 4 years at this stage.

Remember, odds on the first person you say hi to in freshers week will fall into 1 of 2 categories:

    1)BFF
2)you will spend the entire of the next four years desperately trying to not make eye contact with them whenever you pass, either because they're a freak or something weird happened some time or somesuch :D

I presume that you're coming back for a masters then!

Legally - no problem, its not a firearm so its ok

Club rules - Don't know, it would be up to the current comittee to decide (I'm nothing to do with exec this year) but I can ask.

Yeah, but I had to buy my own food!

I got wedgied while my foot was on the roof.

I'm going back for a phd so possibly another five years. I'll join regardless but it would probably get you one or two additional members.

On topic: Dispite all the lovey hippy stuff on this thread, its entirely possible that the group of people you meet in freshers week will turn out to be complete tools and at some stage you will be forced to crap them and start again. I did this early on, I know others who spent two years in college before getting to know the right people.

Some are uber-nerdy but most are grand. You'll be mixing with Science, Maths and other folk anyways so don't be worrying. There'll probably be a few McLovins there at any rate.

Don't know any undergrads, but I have been out with TP and math postgrads and had fantastic nights out. Any of the maths / science people I know are generally bang on as well so don't get too worried!

Hi I'm doing TP too- well for the time being at least.lol I know some guys doing it who are quite simply 'cool' and others who are complete nerds. Oh well. I would not see myself as a nerd(prepares to be ostracised(spelling?) from boards:D ) and I'll just let my friends in normal courses keep me 'normal'. lol Apparently there are a lot of lectures but sh*t happens!

alrite dan, its great to finally talk to someone who is doing tp. are u looking forward to starting? it should be great craic even if the hours are really awkward. hopefully there will be some nice gurls doing tp. freshers wk shud be interesting too. id say it will be easier to talk to people in our course cos it is very small. do u know much about 1st year? :)

Well only what I know from the open day and talking to people.
I assume you know the courses and that- algebra, analysis, mechanics and computing from maths and then all of the physics(except introduction to same) aswell as Special Relativity. Physics includes three hour labs a week which are compulsory.:( I'll be honest the hours are not conduicive to an active social life but I plan to enjoy the weeks and study at weekends. Well hopefully. With only thirty five people in the course we will all know each other very quickly(and of course size up the general level of mathematical ability too). I'm moving to Dublin tomorrow and can't wait to start,. Of course I'll be seeing you during freshers week but if you want to just meet up for a drink beforehand feel free to drop me a PM. Also if you don't know too many people you can check out the buddy programme- details are on Trinity's website.

    Hope some of this helps.

Yeah some people you meet in first year turn out to be complete freaks (AND I MEAN FREAKS) and you wonder why you never noticed at first.

Yep.. I believe its 11am on monday!

One thing I did notice about the timetable for the week. Registration for engineers is at 1030-1130 on Thursday and Library Skills is at 1100...
Anywho.. Im sure we'll manage. Head to registration early or summat

I think the library things are really the same throughout the week, though you do get it geared purely towards engineering & system sciences. Which, I assume, is just 'here are your books'.

I think it says on that sheet that once everyone is registered the libraby tour takes place.
