Ray Darcy ranting about online gambling

Ray Darcy seems to have picked online gambling as his rant for today (on Today FM), if anyone is interested. Although it seems to be as much about poker ads being shown on RTE as much as the evils of gambling itself.

Ray Darcy is at it again, who would have thought? Does he ever shut the **** up and stop trying to be a moral compass or everyone?

Ray D'Arcy is the biggest fcukwit on the face of the earth. He pretends he knows everything about everything when he knows fcuk all about anything. He's a pompous w*nker. Man do i hate that guy.

His radio show is now just a piss poor platform for him to rant incessantly about stuff he knows little to **** all about. He's straying into Gerry Ryan territory now. Today FM should just do us all a favor and hand him his P45.

jeez I'm glad you guys are out there I have disliked Ray Darcy for a couple of years now, everyone seems to love him, he's an idiot who talks absolute nonsense with a holier than thou attitude. Then he says "piss off "or something on radio and thinks he is so dangerous and cool, what a wanker.
A smug bunch of grade 1 a holes on that show grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I could see the point he was making, but didn't agree with it...Let me put it this way, and this doens't, i should think, apply to many folks of this parish, but bear with me...

Back in the day, if you wanted to spaff away your hard earned on 'gambling', it was generally on the GG's or something, and you had to go to a bookies to do it, and your losses were 'public' insofar as at least if you came out and didn't make a beeline for the nearest Merc dealership, the locals would rightly think, 'he's not had a good day'.

I'm generalising, simplifiying and paraphrasing here, but the crux of the point was gambling=bookies and there was a barrier to entry insofar as if you were at work, or didn't feel that bookies were 'your' kind of place, your exposure to the temptation to gamble was reduced and society benefitted.

    Ahem, 'hem!

Nowadays, the logic goes, you can bet on anything, from anywhere; there's nothing to stop you sitting in your jim-jams at 3 in the morning, playing poker with some doofus in Idaho and being taken to the cleaners.

In other words, there is, through internet gambling, more exposure to people to lose more money easier.

There's no doubting that this is the case.

Is that a good enough reason to ban advertisements? Hell no. Personal choice, and personal responsibility come into play again. We haven't banned the sale of dry roasted nuts because the allergic reaction in 0.005% of the population, er, kills them...rather people who are at risk avoid nuts.

Yes there is, he's from Idaho. You'd be winning.

Sunday was the first time RTE showed them, afaik. It was during the breaks of the All-Ireland coverage. TV3 have been showing poker ads for a few months, I think.

Darcy's rant was that the national broadcaster shouldn't be showing these ads, as they only add to the gambling epidemic. He reckons it's okay for TV3, etc, to be showing them as they are private-owned and need the money. But he has it in for RTE anyway, he comes across as being very biased against them.

I hated him when he was on the den, and when he was judging a competition for a book I wrote, I haven't heard his voice since.

You poor man, I had to listen to the radio at work while I waited for my mp3 player to be delivered. The horrible repitition and idiot presenters.

Why were you listening to him?
I tuned in because I'm interested in the subject.
what I've heard so far is all heat and no light there are plenty of problem gamblers wanting to tell their stories. The discussion about the National Anthem is probably even more annoying than the gambling one! Sooner its over the better, I can turn over to John Kelly on Lyric :)

There was an interesting report published in the UK recently that seems to have confounded all expectations by showing that there are no more problem gamblers now than there was eight years ago

I was listening to Tony Cascarino, Andy Black and Tom Hanlon on the radio on monday being interviewed by Tubridy. Interesting yet fairly light hearted stuff. Tubridy wasnt really digging for dirt or anything. They projected the game in a good light particularly Andy.
For those interested its podcasted at this link

I work in work yesterday and saw these ads. I was surprised that there were so many of them. I kept thinking that RTE were televising a poker tournament somewhere!

You may think that it's great for the game, but with more losing gamblers than winning players, it may actually be bad for society.

Personally I think D'Arcy is full of ****e!
