Desktop Graphics Issue

I recently put together a new PC along with a Radeon 2900xt and it had been running fine for a week or two. Recently, however, I've started noticing occasional black boxes appearing on the screen when I'm browsing the web or loading flash videos (youtube, etc). These usually disappear if I minimise firefox and, as yet, I haven't seen them appear on any other window.
Along with the above issue though, there's a more serious problem. Again, it occurs occasionally while browsing and not doing anything particularly intensive, but the graphics card will reset itself and gives the message:

"vpu recover has reset your graphics accelerator as it was no longer responding to graphics driver commands"

I'm at a loss as to what's going on as I've not experienced this before. I don't think it's a heat issue as I've played through the entirity of half life 2 and I didn't have a single graphical error.

    Any ideas, anyone?

I always turn off VPU Recover after a driver update, I read it's no use really, that probably hasn't changed for the new cards & drivers but there's some info here about it, near the end of the page:

Just turn it off in the display settings and see if there's a change. :)
