We regularly get people posting with C&C or looking for advice on what makes a good photo or how to improve their compositional skills ...

We'll for my money much inspiration comes from looking at the work of others and thinking about what makes it appealing ... this is a big factor in the learning process in my opinion ...

Another is patience and persistance ... the kind of patience to involves going back to the same spot several times to wait for the right moment ...

Both of the above are very much in evidence in the 12 amazing photos on the Guardian site ... they sould help to get the juices flowing ... enjoy -

    (look at the photo gallery)

I'd be interested if everyone could state a favorite (if you can't choose imagine we are holding a gun to your head ;))

My personal fav - The Windsurfer

nothing really grabs me out of them, to be honest I couldnt pick one - gun or no gun. They all seem to lack something and there are a few odd crops in there. Maybe Im just not a landscape kind of guy but these would not be what i'd turn to when in need of inspiration..these dont really tick the boxes for me in terms of travel or landscape photography

I have some issues with that selection of photographs in that I would only consider six of them to be landscape photographs.

However, my favourite of them is Storm over Scroby Sands Windfarm.

Only the mono windsurfer shot really caught my eye.

if you had a gun to my head, I'd go for number 6 / 12, Hillside Chapel near Talsarnau, North Wales, but nothing jumped out at me

6, 7 and 9. Agree that not all are what I would call landscape but these are imho classy shots.

3, 7, and maybe 11. Some nice shots, but not necessarily great landscapes.

I think the most interesting thing here is some of us seem to hate them ... others like 'em .... here's to diversity ...

I like most of them myself ... especially when you consider some are taken with a camera phone ... for me 2, 4, 7, 11 I really like ...

1 deserves a special mention for the fact (I understand) it was taken by a camera phone ...

9 is a good shot of an amazing scene ... though I'm sure you can find better of the same subject ...

The rest I quite like but they don't grab me by the throat and scream "look at me!"

All except the juggler (10) are a source of inspiration for me ... I don't really like the juggler one for some reason ... can't quite say why though ...

    .. can't quite say why though ...

some men prefer blonde's over brunettes ?
variety is the spice of life

(BTW I'm with the brunettes crowd  )

Have to agree with Calina. Landscapes???? The Storm over Scroby sands is ok. The rainbow one is awful :D

If I am forced, no. 6 and 12 could be called good landscapes.

A couple of them looked oversharpened like 1 and 3 (Which i liked) the wind surfer one is hilarious its like the volkswagon polo ad :D

Also liked 8 and 11 was pretty cool

I discounted the ones that weren't landscapes in my eyes - a lot...
and those that seemed to be heavily worked on...
which actually didn't leave many and, of those, some - the rainbow - could be discounted for simple reasons ... like they were facile...
which left a very short short list and while they are good, none of them screamed out at me.
    so can I abstain?
    :)
