I'm 25 and am just realising now that I might be a bit strange when it comes to my eating habits. I hate people sitting at a table with me when I'm eating and they're not. I hate people watching me eat. I hate people remarking on what I am eating. If any of you have ever brought your own sandwiches to work, you may have known a colleague who couldn't help but ask about and then comment on your choice of filling. I hate that sh!t.. "Mind your own fcuking business. What do you care what I'm eating?"Is this odd behavior?

Also I don't really like people cooking for me.. I don't mind My mother, My sister, My ex-girlfriend, before she became ex..well that is to say I still would have no problem with her cooking for me it's just that it is unlikely. and one or two close friends could get away with it. But generally I don't like to have to deal with people asking me how it was, or worse; during, when I'm chewing it. Leave me alone! If I knew I had to give you marks out of ten, I'd have told you to stick it up your arse.

    Am I sad?

    Not sad, just slightly strange.

On a side note, am I the only one who hates when people talk when you're eating. You can talk when we're finished, now is eating time!

I'm a bit weird too when it comes to food, and I know a lot of people who have eating issues. For example, I won't eat meat with fat on it. That's not meat, it's fat, and it's disgusting IMHO. Nor will I eat meat off the bone, or meat covered with skin.

So, that makes it awkward for me to go to other people's houses when they stick a chicken wing in front of me, I just can't deal with it, or if someone puts a whole fish in front of me, I'm the same. And to be perfectly honest, it's embarassing sometimes for me, but it's the way I am. I think meat should be just that, meat, and the bits of the animal I'm not going to eat should be removed before I start devouring.

Hmm...I definitely don't like eating in front of others who aren't...don't know why, But it everyones eating away, then it's grand.

I agree man. Lets all just get this chow down the hatch. Then we can all sit back and have a nice chat. I don't like talking with my mouth full or watching someone else do it.

What about if you've got a really really witty retort that just has to be put out there in order for people to laugh and to make mental notes that you're a character and probably dead on, before the conversation moves on.

I can't eat Fat either it's disgusting! Jibbering goo... even thinking about it unsettles my stomach and i'm the exact same when it comes to your beliefs in meat. It's fillet steak or nada.

SteamTrean I would agree with you, although i do like a good yap while eating, but I hate people staring at me and asking me if it's nice.
Or the ultimate annoyance, when you specifically ask your better half doe she want some <insert food here> while your cooking it and she says "no". As soon as you take your first bite she's over beside you saying "Oh, that looks nice, give me a taste".

Eff off ya effers, tis my food!

I don't think many people like eating when sitting with others who are not. If somebody stares at you when you're eating, then I think that is weird and rude! - But, maybe they're not staring, or at least don't realise they are, but rather they are just talking to you, you happen to be eating, so they are looking in the general direction of your mouth/face?

On the issue of cooking - why exactly don't you like people cooking for you? This one, you should probably try to work on, for social purposes. Most people are pleased to have a meal served up to them! Some people really enjoy cooking, or at least like to make the effort to cook for others for entertaining, sociable purposes, and can go to a lot of trouble, so it's natural enough for them to want to know if you're enjoying it or not! They may want to know that their effort is appreciated or just want feedback, good or bad, so that they know whether to repeat a recipe or not.

If you're 25 then your social life probably for the most part revolves around pubbing or clubbing, but for a lot of people this activity dwindles a bit and dinner parties become a more frequent event!

You're not sad, you just have a bit of a hang up about eating around people. If someone wants to cook for you though, you either have to say no thanks, or else try and be sociable and don't offend the cook!

Steam train you are not one bit sad.... this is a perfectly normal phenomenon.

I regularly dine with a dude who horses back the grub like a conveyor belt of rubbish into a grinder. How the fcuker chews anything is beyond me,soft hard, meat, stew, salad whatever..... gone!!!

Then sits staring while you finish...... hate that.

    You are not alone friend.

I don't like being asked how it is while I'm eating. I'll give my opinion when I'm finished.

Heh, I'm one of those fcukers, i don't stare at people until they finish though, and i definitely don't talk unless there is already a conversation flowing. Usually just gaze around the room until they finish.

It's not my fault if people can't keep up. *shrug*

OP, This is just one of the manifestations of a related collection of deep rooted issues you have.

A rough list of the issues might be: poor self image, some level of depression, trust issues/abandonment issues, social interaction issues.

All these things feed off each other and create a downward spiral so you should look into resolving them. Either that or stop eating like a pig so people cant help but stare.

Weird tbh, how do you people cope with restaurants, family occasions, work dinners, dates, especially dates???

I know one or two people with weird eating disorders like this, mainly girls, and I cannot for the life of me understand it.

Eating is the process of putting food in your mouth and swallowing it. Wtf is so embarassing or traumatic about that?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 36,634 ✭✭✭✭Ruu_Old

I know one individual who we no longer invite out to eat. *chewing* 'Mmm this is so *chews more* tasty and the meat is cooked so mmm *chews while pointing to meat with fork* perfectly'. This would go on for quite some time. Shut up and eat it!

I totally agree with Galwayguy here. I would hate to go on a date with someone who had issues like that. It takes a while to get to know someone well enough for the comfortable silences to be that - comfortable. In the mean time, conversation should be flowing over the dining table so you can get to know each other...

Reminds me of an extract from a stand-up sketch by Frank Skinner talking about the different social aspects of eating in cultures around the world:

FRANK: "look at the Aborigines for example. They have no problem with sh1tting in public but when it comes to eating, they go off to eat on their own. However, these things usually seem more logical if you follow them to their natural conclusion. I, for example, eat in public all the time: Burger King, McDonalds...whatever. However, i think i might have a completely different attitude towards it if there was a lot of people taking sh!ts in public"

Anyway, I've no probs with eating in public UNLESS there's somebody who didn't order anything commenting on it. "That looks nice......i had that in Turkey once and i was sick for a week.......ugh, don't know how you can eat coleslaw etc. etc."

BAM!......the ol' fork in the eye trick.

Only if he were to eat the corpse in public, with no one else eating and everyone commenting on it. And of course hed have to eat her entirely - bones, fat and all...:p

Sounds like the OP has an eating disorder, I mean who cares what they look like when they are eating unless they have bad table manners

I have serious issues with watching and listening other people eat, it does my head in. I HATE the sound of somebody chewing and swallowing their food and I HATE watching the whole process!
I don't mind the sort of crunching noise that happens sometimes, it's the sluuuuuuuuuurpy chomping nyom nyom noise and that mgom noise that people make when they swallow. I get so stressed and angry I can't stand it! It sounds really odd I know and normally I won't say it to their face (usually cos there's food in it) but I can't stop thinking about it...And I hate the sight of people mangling their food with their hands and making a huge mess.

Oh and I'm a messy eater from time to time myself btw...

Same here, it seriously puts me off my food and worries me in case I ever do the same.
Hate people watching me eat aswell, not to the point where I'd start a thread about it now, but since one was already here...

I was just thinking the same thing today myself, OP. I am a messy eater and today I was sitting in the canteen when a piece of food wouldnt fit in my mouth properly and I made a face like a retard. Just then I caught the eyes of a guy who must have been watching me eat, because he quickly looked away when I caught his gaze. I was like what the hell are you watching me eat for? Eating should be a personal and private experience. But I do like people cooking for me.

OP - I dont know why you dont like people eating with you thats a bit too strange. Maybe you are better off eating at home before going out?
I dont care if people watch me eat (im always eating!) but I dont like going to peoples houses for food. I have IBS so I cant eat anything at all spicy and im a strange eater (I hate potatoes, mayonnaise, peas and salad for example but I love meat).
I love restaurants as you can order what you want but theres nothing worse than being in someones house and they serve you up something you cant stomach!
Its the same with sandwihces I hate sandwices with butter always have (the ma used to layer sambos with an inch of butter yuck). If Im offered a sandwich I usually say 'no thank you' but I hate when they go into missus doyle mode and try to force feed you.
