Dose anyone know at what time today the Team Fortress 2 beta will be playable? Thought it was at six for some reason.
Can’t find any specific time listed on the steam site and the forum keeps crashing on me:confused:

    Damn you!
I eagerly opened steam again as soon as I saw the title of this thread:p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26 Mickey_37

oh very sorry, should have put a "?" at the end of that title i guess.
anyway after a bit of digging about i found a post over on the eurogamer fourm suggesting that it may not be released untill 2am!
    way past my bed time!

"Chaps, Valve has advised us the review embargo is now 6pm PST, which I think is 2AM GMT.

Bit of a mix-up, basically. Sorry about that."

    Still not up.

Apparently they have problems with the Linux dedicated servers.

it's up for me, you may have to restart steam

Yeah there now. Not sure if irish servers are running, will have one up soon.

I had it fully pre-downloaded... when I logged in this morning it was back to 65%

Had a go at launching it and it popped up to 99%.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,279 ✭✭✭DemonOfTheFall

I wish I could justify wasting loads of money to get it....... But I just can't. Have to wait for the real release like a chump.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

I gave it a quick go this morning.

Very laggy in parts... but when it was running smoothly it handled really well and feels really good to play. Lovely overall presentation as well.

Team Fortress Classic was the only online FPS I ever really got into and I haven't played in a long, long time... but I'm enjoying this.

I'm not sure I follow. You're not spending any extra, there's no money wastage going on, you'd just be buying on Steam instead of retail, and you get to play it earlier.
Or do you mean you don't have money now, but you will when it's out (October 10th)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

It's actually cheaper now than it will be at launch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,304 ✭✭✭✭koneko

Indeed, 10% right? Some retailers might sell it cheap enough but it won't be much different from the Steam price, and this way you get to play the beta.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,279 ✭✭✭DemonOfTheFall

Oh, I thought youd had to buy the Orange box to play the Beta? As in the collection that includes HL2 and Ep1 and Ep2 and everything? I already have HL2 and Ep1 and I'm not buyin them

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,279 ✭✭✭DemonOfTheFall

Oh I just saw Steam and it's 45dollars for the orange box..... I thought it was like $110. Where the hell did I see that......

Just guessing here , but I take it this is only available as part of the orange box , so if he already has HL:2 and episode 1 and maybe has no interest in Portal and episode 2 the it can just have TF2 for $30 on day of release instead of $45 now .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

It might be about that if you try to buy them all separately.

I didn't have Episode 1 yet... so it's not such a bad deal for me... Plus anything you already have you can give as a gift.

DemonOfTheFall - give Fortress Forever a try. Its another Team Fortress mod for HL2 that came out last week. www.fortress-forever.com.

Its actually excellent, I've been having loads of fun with it. Got a few bugs (it is a free mod whose release was rushed forward a few weeks to beat TF2 to market - Valve announced availability of TF2 for the same day as FF's release was scheduled). I haven't encountered any showstopping ones yet.

Just plumped for the orange box there. Why must the internet molest my credit card so...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,304 ✭✭✭✭koneko

    DemonOfTheFall,
They had a thing on the site that lists how much it would cost to buy everything seperate, that was probably what you saw. It works out really good value considering everything that's in the pack (HL2, Ep 1, Ep2, Portal and TF2), and as monkeyfudge said you can gift anything you already have (HL2, ep1) to someone else.

Tell me about it :( It's a good time for games, but a bad time for our wallets.

    Read my post from earlier.

I had that problem too... just right click and launch it and it decrypts and goes up to 99%.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,339 ✭✭✭✭tman

Yeah, I managed to suss that out myself eventually after fruitlessly opening a few ports and stuff first.
    Should've just read this thread:o

    /edit
anyone know if the acievements from TF2 will be available in all products in the Orange box? (as in, will HL2 and episode 1 be getting an update as well?)
Was a nice surprise to see them in TF2, they always seem to provide an extra incentive to keep playing a 360 game

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

So tman - is it any good? I'm sitting here at 94% after decryption...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,449 ✭✭✭Call Me Jimmy

Yeah I really wanna hear people's opinions of it, I only have hl2 so the orange box would be defo worth it if this was good

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,339 ✭✭✭✭tman

Maybe close and reopen steam? she can be an akward beast at times....

Seems to be great so far, but too damn buggy to enjoy fully at this stage.
First game on an almost empty server was fine, until everybody quit. second game had "connection problems" after a few minutes, and the game seems to crash completely if you alt+tab out of it.
Third game was going well until it crashed to the desktop... which seemed to be an issue with display drivers, so I'm going to try out some beta ones now. (the most recent stable 64 bit nvidia drivers are from July!)

All in all it seems good, I'm definitely looking forward to getting into it if i'm lucky enough to have a few stable games... (which is higher praise than it might seem, as I generally find online games very hard to get into)

    Eurogamer review is up now
    9/10

Yeah, had another quick game and I'm really beginning for fall for this game. Easily the most fun I've had playing a game online since UT2004:)
Keep getting owned by turrets though:o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

Turrets are super tough... I'm sure I hit one with four rockets dead on and it was still standing.

Loving the medic, very powerfull class and when you pair with a HWGuy you can single handily hold a point if you play right.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 746 ✭✭✭whitetrash

Had a few hours of perfect play then it crashed when I tried the take-a-screenshot-of-who-killed-you. Loving it so far anyway, especially the heavy, demoman and spy!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,339 ✭✭✭✭tman

Pyro is great craic altogether, I managed to get the achievement for setting 5 people on fire in 30 secs:p
I'm definitely in agreement with EG's review after a couple of hours play. I felt a little bitter about the cost of the orange box, when all I wanted to do was preorder episode 2 and Portal, but this game alone is well worth the asking price imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,449 ✭✭✭Call Me Jimmy

Woah this is so class. It's inspiring too, love it! What servers u guys playin on?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,285 ✭✭✭TheHairyFairy

Loving it too, just makes me laugh out loud and say wtf. All good tbh.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,279 ✭✭✭DemonOfTheFall

Amazing game! Well worth the cost of Orange Box. Been playin it for about 4 hours today. I get by far the most points with Soldier and Engie, Medic and Demo can be decent too. Can't really "get" any of the other classes....
    Pyro- Cripplingly short range
    HWG- Sloooow
Spy- Im too dumb to be stealthy
Sniper- Snipin skills not up to scratch, too used to 2142
    Scout- Too weak

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,339 ✭✭✭✭tman

You really need a medic backing you up to get the most out of HWG, he deals and takes massive ammounts of damage... definitely my fave character so far.
Pyro does massive damage up close, the closer you are, the more damage. and still has decent shotty for longer range attacks. (the spread of his shotty seems a little smaller than the other classes, but i might've imagined that...)

Haven't tried the engie yet, and haven't given medic, demo or spy a decent chance...
Scout's double jump and speed are pretty handy, but he's definitely too weak for my liking...

awesome game, anybody who's still debating whether to pre-order the orange box should stop being such a pussy and just buy the damn thing!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,449 ✭✭✭Call Me Jimmy

Jesus I've been playing it all night! (no college till next week :P) I've been playing as the spy the whole time and it's so satisfying. Ye have to be patient and concentrate for every second you're playing tho. If you're not concentrating for a couple of seconds yer dead or given up so ye have to start again. Absolutely brilliant tho.

EDIT: I think any decent team leads with the HWG backed up by medic and then everyone else works around that, it's the fundamental partnership of the game.

I've found all the classes to be well balanced and have their pro's and cons. I tend to play as the demoman or hwg to begin with and then switch to others depending on how the match is going.

Fantastic game. Graphics are amazing when notched up fully (MPAA and AF)
Really is a great testiment to the original TF while changing it around just enough to make it more modern.
Favourite classes so far have to be soldier and sniper, demo man and medic are good aswell. Scout is REALLY poor, needs to be made a bit better.
Pyro class is my only dislike, it's a pure 'noob' class, newcomers can just select it and run around spraying people hoping they'll set on fire and die.

    Still, brilliant so far!

I'm not having a go at you but I just hate this attitude. It was the same in Kingpin: Life Of Crime - there was a flamer and anyone who uses it was deemed a noob coz it's no skill but it's only close range. The pyro's weapons are close range weapons and if you are out of that range then he has nothing. I haven't played as pyro yet but I like it, and I never think anyone is a noob for picking it because like all of the classes it has its pros and cons.

heh, that's fair enough, I just dislike classes like that myself, but I can see your point.

As I see plenty of 360 owners here, has anyone played both this and the CoD4 MP beta?
I already have HL2 and EP1 on the PC so the whole orange box doesn't really interest me unless I'm going to end up playing TF2 an awful lot.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,279 ✭✭✭DemonOfTheFall

On playing it a bit further I like pretty much all the classes equally now. Got the gist of all of them.

If you're debating it, BUY IT!

You can gift your old HL2 etc to another steam user.

Have played both, and they're both a lot of fun, I would say TF2 probably has more lasting appeal though.

Episode 2 and TF2 bought seperately costs more than Orange Box, plus you can gift your extra games to a friend, as HairyFairy said.

My god, this game just keeps getting better and better!
I'd definitely recommend playing some of the maps on a less busy server at first (10-12 players tops), 2fort went from being one of my least favourite maps to being my fave now that I know the ins and outs...
I keep thinking that I've found my favourite class, then I try another one out and after a few minutes everything just falls into place and playing as them feels right.
This is easily the most enjoyable multiplayer fps I've played since Insta UT2004, and HL1 before that.:)
