If it was from your options I would choose Berlin, from hers, Stockholm. However, I haven't been to either!

If you're after a bit of culture, I'd highly recommend Vienna, though I know you didn't list it.

    Have fun!

Budapest is like a dirty Vienna ;)

god I couldn't choose. Quite often it's the company you keep not the location. I'm sure you will both enjoy wherever you choose. Venice is cool though, and lovely this time of year. But on the other hand, Budapest is much cheaper...

Personally, I'd be happy to go to Budapest again and again.

    But...
If you want to make her happy you should give her what she would like, and I think everybody who gets the chance should experience Venice. It is different, and special. It is also the most expensive of the destinations you list (Stockholm being second -- can you afford her tastes?).

My boyfriend and I have had city breaks in Berlin and Budapest and both were brilliant.
Budapest is a good one for a romantic break....lots of nice places to see, moonlit dinner cruise on the Danube etc.
Berlin is a really cool city, loads of history and great nightlife. We went to a restaurant where you eat in the dark and another club/restaurant in a big warehouse where you eat on beds.
    Definitely recommend both of them.
Haven't been to any of the other places you mentioned though.

....forgot to mention if you go to Budapest you have to go to one of the thermal spas....just be prepared to see lots of ugly naked people :D

I can vouch for Stockholm. Lovely place, albeit expensive even by our standards. But how much can you spend in a weekend? :)

Only thing to look out for would be the weather. When are you going?

Of that list I'd like to go to Stockholm

+1 for Stockholm. Beautiful city, the Venice of the North.
I've been over a dozen times and never tire of it.
It's not much more expensive than Dublin for a night
    out. Great shopping too.

    Gary,

I have been to 7 of these 9 locations and my favourite has to be Stockholm. Beautiful place with lots of very beautiful people!
Try to book at night at Cafe Opera if possible - major brownie points with the girlfriend! amazing place, amazing decor...
book your meal for about 9pm - at about 11.30pm the place transforms into a nightclub! so you're there for the night. It will cost you, but I thought it was worth it..
Also go to the Old Town (Gamla Stan) - Situated on a small island in the heart of Stockholm, it is a maze of medieval streets. Gamla Stan is crammed with historic attractions, including Stockholm's cathedral and the royal palace.

    whatever you decide - enjoy!

Since we are going in late febuary Stockholm will be freezing cold, so we're going to go there nxt summer instead. We choose Berlin because we got a really good deal on the flights (45euro return each incl. tax!) and the flights were at perfect times of the week for us. Also booked us a trip to Edinbrugh in january for a weekend, got the flights for 20euro return as Ryanair were having a sale.

Have been to Prague, Roma, Paris and Barcelona and I liked them best in that order. Was quite disapointed by Barca tbh, I dont see what the big fuss is. Prague though i though was amazing and would go back straigt away if it wasnt for me wanting to see other places

So much for romance: your choice decided by money!

I'd expect Berlin to be almost as cold as Stockholm in February. I haven't been there yet, but I'll be going in November. Preliminary research suggests that there is plenty of good indoor stuff, which might be needed. A lot of the things you might like about Stockholm involve being outside, so I think you made the better choice.

    Enjoy!

Yes I was in Amsterdam recently. Cyclists drive you mad after a while but locals speak good english and transport very efficient. But as holidays go I would recommend going to croatia and doing a tour of the country. Split has some lovely islands.

    And whats wrong witht that>!:D

My advice to the OP is exactly that, if you can't decide go for the cheapest. As boreds was saying, you're going to enjoy yourself no matter what. Stockholm could be twice as expensive as Budapest say, will it be twice as good?

If you manage to save enough on the cheaper destination, you've justified another break away for yourselves a month later:)

Great!! All my questions answered! Thinking of a city break myself.

If you're looking for somewhere to stay in Edinburgh, I loved The Victorian Townhouse. Lovely owners, great breakfast, very big rooms with big ensuite. I didn't find accommodation cheap there generally but I definitely found this worth what we paid.
