Dole Question

I'm currently working part time In Xtravision. Not getting many hours and not getting paid much. I'm taking evening classes and was thinking of quitting the Xtravision job to work on my portfolio. A friend of mine is on the dole. He was working part time for a few years, is living at home with his parants who are well off, but just quit his job and signed on. He's getting about 185 euro a week.

This confused me a little because I was told if youre living at home or if you quit your job yourself then you're not entitled to much.

Now, I'll be moving out, paying about 85 euro rent a week. My question is, if I quit my Xtravision job is it likely I'll be entitled to as much dole money as my friend?

If you are out on your own and have no means assessed against you, you should get E185.80. However if you have left your job you may be disqualified from getting jobseeker's allowance for up to 9 weeks.

I understand that the Social Welfare will continue to pay the 185 for something like 320 days provided the applicant/recipient "meets the requirements"...suppose you have been looking for work, have proof of same, but just can't get a break,,,will they cut you right off after the allotted period? Will you be left to starve, or is there something else to help you??

I have a list of refusals the length of my arm.....I am pretty well educated, I've done the whole building site thing, I want to make use of my education, I mean, I could probably get a job in the morning as a rent boy, but, jokes aside, do the Welfare OBLIGE you to take the first job that comes along, or are you given grace to find a job that SUITS.

Otherwise, the old pathology is just played out. You get a job, you pack it in to try and find a proper job that is congruous with your educational background {I have a college degree} and before you know it, you are back on the dole, facing the threat of disconnection, then you get cut-off, take the first job that comes along etc etc etc.....

Jobseeker's allowance lasts over 390 days (Jobseeker's Benefit - the one based on PRSI contributions dosent). Just keep any efforts you have as regards looking for work

I don't mean to hijack your thread, but I've been out of work on disability for 7 weeks. When it came to going back to work, I discussed it with my manager and it wasn't going to work out, so now I have to apply for Jobseekers benefit. Will the 9 weeks apply to me?

I am getting the €185.50 one. Whats that? I am nearly sure that there was some mention of PRSI when I was going thru the application, but that might have been that I didn't have to be means-tested thanks to PRSI conts. I had made whilst working.

Thanks for your help. Its a real nightmare dealing with these people, they have the power over you.

To be honest i can't say for definate, however it's unlikley since he does not have a vacancy there for you and you technically didn't leave your job as such.

It sounds like you are on Jobseeker's Benefit. It lasts for 390 days or 15 months if you have over 260 PRSI contributions paid. If you have less than 260 PRSI contributions paid it will last for 312 days.

They are reasonable in Social Welfare, if there is something you don't understand just ask them and they will be able to help you.

How many PRSI conts. would I have made over a 5 month period working a flat 40 hours on the buildings???

Also...what happens when the 312 days are up??.....suppose I can show them, as I believe I can, that I have been looking for a serious job?? Will they still cut me off?? Or do I receive a reduced payment??:confused:

    Thanks.

Usually you get one contribution paid per week as you can only have a maximum of 52 in any one year.

When your 312 days on Jobseeker's Benefit run out you will need 13 prsi contributions paid since the 156th day on your claim to requalify as well as satisfying all the other conditions. If your are not entitled to another 312 days benefit you can claim Jobseekers Allowance which is means tested (again you have to satisfy the conditions),

The idea is not to just go quitting a job before you have a new one.

Unemployment should only be given to people who are genuinely unemployed, not people who decide to get some free money instead of staying in a job till they find a new one. Just because you cant get the job you want doesnt mean you cant work.

I agree. I spent 6 months in a job i disliked before i found the one i really wanted.

    1. Why would unemployed people want Unemployment??

    2. I had a job but I got laid off from it. Then I developed arthritis in my right hand and so that kinda rules out me applying for more jobs in the buildings. Nobody wants a kid with a gammy hand, and, besides, why should an educated guy work himself into the mat when he is {and has} genuinely tried to better himself??

    3. Money is never free. It all comes with an opportunity cost. As it happens I am trying to negotiate a loan deal with the bank so I can get out from under??

    4. Just because you can work doesn't mean you should work, per se. I already made the example, but I'll make a more extreme one for those of you who choose to ignore the obvious: if I see an ad in tomorrows paper for a rent boy, and I turn it down, don't apply etc...can it be said that I should be taken off the dole because I didn't like the job advertised??

    Daftness.

Surely it behoves the State to allow me time to get into a proper job. Then they can tax me and get their allowances back. If I am struggling mixing cement then they will never ever see their money back.

I am trying to get into jobs I dislike so I can work my way into one I like. That said thanks for your help and tips. PS how much is the Jobseekers Allowance, and what are the conditions to which you refer? I am currently paying rent of €350 per month and I am self-dependent for all intents and purposes. Will a guy be calling out to the house or something?? Cheers again.

Jobseeker's allowance is E185.80 and its means tested and yes an inspector will have to find out your means.

You might be entitled JSA (dole) but its means tested. If your still living at home then it is means tested on your parents income. You can see how they work out how much your entitled to on www.welfare.ie. Its got all the info you need on there.

On another note I hope you dont mind me asking why you dont go back and do the leaving cert if you realise now its a big deal? Not to be patronising but your so young that you could easily do it, could do it from home even if you really didnt want to go back to school... the way things are at the moment with jobs etc. I think you would be wise to think about it.... just an idea :)
