Just heard that in the last couple of weeks the Cork test centre have started looking for the look-signal-look over the left shoulder, with a life saver on the left for left hand turns. Is this the standard for the whole country now?

    I would hope so :)

On a normal road, this is really only required when moving or moving slowly - to ensure that no bikes or other motorbikes have creeped into the left. Places tend to look for it though, no matter what the situation.

On a dual carriageway, it's an essential manouver when moving back into the left.

Yep, seamus is right, they're needed, especially in citys. Even when pulling away a lights, in the left hand lane, on the left hand side of the road almost touching the kerb, with your left indicator on, a cyclists will still try and pass you!

Jeez, you mean they didn't look for that before?

Did my test in Dundrum in 1996 and you were definitely expected to do a lifesaver on the side you were going to move towards. It's not called a lifesaver for nothing...

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

Passed my test a month ago in Cork. During my lesson the day before the instructor told me they want to see lifesavers over the left shoulder when turning left, before moving off, pulling in and before any manouevre like the u turn etc. It makes sense to do one anyway.

I did the test in churchtown two years ago and was advised to always do a left hand lifesaver when turning left.
The amount of cyclists who will fly through on the inside is incredible, particuarly if you are stopped at lights.

Always do the lifesaver on the left.
Because if you hit a cyclist you just know that the motorcyclist will be judged a at fault

Jesus, I was doing lifesavers when I did my test....in 1982. If the test centres haven't been checking for the basics it doesn't give me much confidence in them.
Never mind hitting a cyclist, don't fancy being hit by a car, bus, lorry or what ever else is coming up the inside.
