Sound on TV3

Is the sound on TV 3 known to be crap?

I rarely watch it but usually watch Corrie* on it to get away from the ten years of Cadbury promos on UTV. My DTT box is connected by toslink to a 7.1 receiver and I notice that the sound is dreadful on Corrie -ups and downs, dips, muddled and muddy -like a compressor or AFT is on it preventing any sort of natural dynamics. Is this typical of the channel?

    (*Yeah, I know, I know).

DTT? Wrong board, this is the satellite board.

    Moved to Terrestrial.

My mistake, though clearly it isn't widely available on DTT, except on the limited trial.

I meant my Sony Sky box which is connected by analogue cable to my receiver. The rebroadcast sound is noticeably bad, in fact downright odd, on TV3 and especially and consistently on Corrie.

I made a mistake: can you now move it back?

    Now moved back to Satellite.

I hadn't paid any attention to your Location.

Though clearly, when you say DTT, I think of digital terrestrial and TV3 is available on DTT in Dublin and surrounds.

TV3 audio is generally over-compressed and inconsistent IMO

Its not the fault of whatever distribution you happen to be watching on, its from the source (TV3).

TV3 News is a perfect example of totally unnecessary over use of compression.

In general, it sounds to me like they are using single band compression/limiting also. This results in a lot of agressive "ducking", depending on the program output.

This is the information I was looking for as I rarely watch the channel: I know it's not my system as no other channel I watch sports such shoddy, compressed sound. Coronation St can be watched on either ITV 1 or 2 and the audio difference is whopping when watched on TV3 instead. I think I'll skip their news bulletin.

And even then it's a waste of space. ;)

I was never bothered by the Cadbury's promos, though the reason I'd watch something on UTV over TV3 is the lack of DOGs.

Yes, indeed, I shall change my ways. No DOGs plus good sound vs Cadbury's Solid Vegetable Fat wins.

Have you tried emailing TV3 to complain? I'd agree that the sound is generally over-compressed on the SKY platform (don't have terrestrial so can't compare). I have also noticed that the EPG programme start times are not adjusted when a previous programme over-runs (e.g. rugby world cup). I have emailed to query this and have not had an acknowledgement. There's obviously no one running the station:D everything's been set on auto-pilot...

That reminds me of the good old days of Radio Ireland before they became Yesterday FM.
