i have recently started using ps 3 , for sharpening previously on cs , i used unsharpen mask , at a radius of 1.1 , and set amount between 15 and 30 , depending on image .. to be honest i have not noticed a great improvement with this -- is the smart sharpen or sharpen edges any good on cs 3 , any reccomendations for this appreciated , as i want to sharpen up a few photos.
    Cheers.

I tend to use High Pass sharpening most of the time, I'd say over the last month of so the breakdown of sharpening has gone something like this:

80% Multiple High Pass Sharpening with masks
    10% Smart Sharpen
    10% USM

I find that they each have their own niche's, I generally try a smart sharpen as its nice a quick, if I don't like the results, bin it and move onto the next.

I did a quick tutorial on multiple high pass sharpening, might be of some use:

Having not used smart sharpen before , what kind of range do you find works best on the Smart Sharpen , for Amount and radius ?

any other tips for it , appreciated .
    cheers

it varies from photo to photo, sometimes 1.2 with 35% will be fine, other times I've whacked it up to 3 at 70%.
    As far as i know:
The radius sets what the limit will be for an edge, so if you have very fine detail a radius of 1.2. If you have "large" edges to be sharpened you'll need to bump it up, but then the rest of the image will look woeful, that's why I tend to use High Pass a few times with different masks to get the best result, takes longer.

Russell Brown has a good set of video's on it, his video's

Do a "find" sharp on the page, there's a lot on there about sharpening

High pass for most of my sharpening, with smart sharpening for a tone-up before I publish.

30% is not a whole lot of sharpening for unsharp mask ...

I use radius of 0.9 - 1.5 and amount of 100-300 depending on the type of image ... however if you are going to do this you need to be careful which pixels you use for sharpening by using a mask ... we learnt in the Guy Gowan tutorial to use Red for portraits, Blue for landscapes and grey for general use ...

Most of the time I prefer smart sharpen to unsharp mask ...

You also need to look for oversharpening in the shadows with this technique ...
