Geezer retires from Armagh team

Heard the sad (but expected) news that Kieran Mc Geeney, the man who captained Armagh to their first senior all ireland title in 2002 has retired at the age of 36 after 17 seasons in the orange jersey. He will be sorely missed and will leave a big void to fill in his famous no.6 jersey and in midfield where he most recently moved to. I wish him all the best and thank him for all he brought to Gaelic Football in Armagh and to the rest of the country!

Not a shock, as he had expressed annoyance at the recent appointment of a new Armagh manager. At 36, he has served his county well, and has his own particular piece of history in being the first Armaghman to receive Sam.

as ye say, not entirely unexpected but certainly a top player (even if I didn't always like him)

anyone got any idea whether McConville, McGrane, etc. have similar plans? It'd be a huge change if they had an exodus of senior players, esp. given that they certainly weren't the same force last year as in previous years

Was a class player alright, say a few more of the Armagh lads will follow.

He is a class act, I wish him well in retirement and hope he stays in the game as a manager.

The gaps will be filled and the team will roll on.

Shame, would have been a good panel player. Reading between the lines, I wonder how happy some of the players are with McDonnell's appointment?

McNulty would be a major loss. Seriously underrated.

I think to put it simply the younger lads wanted Mc Donald but the older heads on the panel (Mc Grane, Mc Geeney, etc) wanted Grimley and that eventually made up Geezers mind to retire!

Like Dublin did when we lost Kieth Barr,
I still dont think we have repaced him. Only this year have we found a free take to replace Charlie.

In spite of the heartbreak he's caused me several times over the years, he will be sorely missed. We were privileged to watch him play football. I don't think any player in the history of the GAA has been so determined and singleminded to achieve success. I was reading a newspaper article about him yesterday - apparently he was training in a gym in Dublin once when some of the Irish rugby team came in and started training too. When they saw the weights he was lifting one of them asked "Who's the Kiwi?".
With the determination he has and the winning mentality, I'd say it won't be long before he is in demand as a coach. No doubt one day he will be managing top intercounty teams.

Have to Say he was a great servant to the Gaa a born winner, great player.

Earlier this year I was out having a few pints with my parents and two brothers in a local hotel. The Armagh team came back after losing to Laois in the league. All the Armagh team was far from being in the best.
We (five Dubs) asked them how they got on Kieran stopped and chatted with us for about 30mins.
He was brutally honest about their performance and came across a very likeable lad.

Yeah I read that article too and already Carlow has approached him regarding the vacant senior manager role!
