Web Monitoring Software needed

    Hi,

I'm looking for some software that can monitor internet usage.

To give some background here, we have an office with 14 people in it. We introduced some internet policy last year about usage of internet for work etc and are beginning to realize that it's been ignored by some people in particular. Obviously we can't go accusing people of time wasting on the internet without proof. So we want some software that can track what sites everyone in the office is looking at and how long they are spending on them.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Webmarshall should do the trick!! You can also block non-work related sites etc with it!

Ha ha. Even with webmarshal you can get around it. Boards.ie is blocked by webmarshall in my place I can still get on to it!

    Hi Silkkut,

Have a look at this website - http://www.browsereporter.com/

Excellent piece of software that is very easy to install and use.

The pricing is also very reasonable compared to some products on the market.

Each user is monitored via an installed service on the PC that reports back to a server or PC that acts as the central console.

There are numerous reports that can be generated detailing user web browsing - it even produces a bar chart - my boss was very impressed with this when I presented it to him!

The software is from a company called Codework.

I dealt with their Irish reseller E-MIT Solutions (www.e-mit.ie).

They were extremely helpful and great to deal with.

Feel free to post back with any questions.

    SurfControl is quite good.

Webmarshall would also be quite good I would think, the Marshal guys know their stuff and are very easy to work with. (We use other MarShal products)

What makes you think they don't know you get around it?

I get what I like to call a Special Email everytime someone bypasses our systems stating the date/time/user. I find very handy to pass to HR when something goes wrong, HR collects the info and then can decide what to do.

Censornet is very good and extremely well priced. Runs on Debian.

We use Websense and it is by far the best and prob the most complicated one out there, prob the most expensive too... but this works like a treat...

If you want to do this right you need to have your external firewall deny all outbound access except for 1 pc/server which will become your web proxy and then setup all computers to access this proxy in the browser connection settings... We also block all FTP access, as you wouldn't believe the stuff that can come in or out using FTP (again on your external firewall)

Simple setup would be Windows Server with Microsoft ISA Server with some security program like Trend Interscan Web Protect...

You can block sites on ISA, but not sure if you can get it to send special emails... We use websense on top of ISA and it has all the nice reporting and trend reports for easy analysis by IT and HR...

Not so simple is use Linux with Squid or Smoothwall... more to tinker but all the software is free...

    Have fun... :D
