Abercrombie overcharging???

I ordered a tshirt and a hoody from abercrombie's UK site about a month ago.
I later found out that the items are much more expensive on the UK site than on the USA one. Shipping costs are the same from both sites.
I thought that perhaps the price difference was due to customs on the goods (I thought maybe it had been pre-calculated).
But today I got a letter from fedex requesting payment for the customs charges.
Can anyone explain to me why it was more expensive from the UK site than the USA, when the items were shipped (at the same cost) from the same warehouse in USA?
Are they just ripping me off?
It works out at about 90 dollars + 40 dollars shipping from the USA site. And I presume customs added to that as well.
From the UK site, for the exact same items, it works out at 171 dollars + shipping + customs.
I would say fair enough for the extra price on the UK site, except for the fact that I was charged customs as well.
Have I any grounds for complaint?
    Thanks.

What website did you buy it from? You wouldn't be liable to import duty if you bought it from the UK. Are you sure you didn't buy it from an American site masquerading as a British one.

    Thanks for the reply.
It looks like you are right.
Abercrombie.com is identical to abercrombie.uk.com except it has the prices in sterling.
The prices are not an equal match either, the UK ones are more expensive.
Is that legal? To advertise as a UK site and give the impression the items would be stocked in the UK, but still ship from the USA.

Basically, they're ripping you off and are quite blatant and up front about it.

Why do you see this as being ripped off? The cost of doing business in Europe is far higher than it is in the US. There is also VAT etc to take into account.

Europe is also a more diserning market than the US ie the "D4" effect - the brand is seen as a premium brand in Europe and is priced as such.

I'm sure if the minimum wages and consumer and employee protection legislation were relaxed in Europe the cost of goods would fall to that of the US

The goods are all manufactured and shipped from the same place so European wages shouldnt come into it really.

It seems (from the link provided just above) that abercrombie are basically ripping people off just because they can.
