Heading to New York in Nov. I know games bought over there wouldn't work on a console bought in Ireland but would accessories work, controllers etc...???
If I was to buy a game over there is there any way I could get it to work on a PAL machine?

Not without modding your Wii, and even then it's not 100% guaranteed that it will work. Accessories will work fine though..

Have you seen the exchange rate recently? Metroid Prime 3 in the US - $50 = 36 euro. I'd imagine it will be 55 euro on its release here. That's almost 20 euro cheaper.
