Nightmares

Hi All, just looking for some opinions on what may be causing this...

Over the past week I've been having really aswful nightmares. Last night I woke up at half four in a cold sweat having dreamt that I found my best friends body floating in a swamp (nice). My heart was racing and I had to talk myself down in order to go back to sleep. Not to go into too much detail but on Wednesday night I had a similar dream about my mom who passed away years ago. My nightmares seem to feature death and people I love committing suicide. Sorry for being so morbid on a sunny Friday morning but I'm feeling a little fragile after a few nights of troubled sleep. I'm already worried about going to bed tonight in case I have more nightmares.

I'm really happy in almost all aspects of my life at the moment and there's nothing major that's stressing me out or making me anxious so I don't understand why my subconscious mind seems to be so troubled! I know this may not sound like a problem and I know it'll probably pass soon but it is really upsetting. These nightmares are pretty f*cked up and very bleak but all invloving people i know so they feel quite real.

Any ideas why this might be happening? Apologoes again for the morbidness (not sure if thats even a word)

I regularly have dreams like this but they really dont bother me. When I wake up they do and I think 'phew, only a dream'. They cvan be very strange and sometimes I dream I've killed people and then have to go on the run. I could write a book about them I think. But the reality is, they are just dreams. I live with them.

On a side note, I often get up out of bed and look around for things. No idea what I'm looking for but just looking for something. Not good when you're not alone lol.

I regularly (once a month to two months) have a nightmare that someone is walking around the bedroom, house and they are tring to kill me and my family. I was watching a programme on tv about a month ago with the wife and she was talking about how freaky the dreams these people have were, my response was that I have them too. You should have seen her face.

They are as has been said just dreams and as such you willl have to deal with them it helps if you tall people about them (this site should be fine) as you then think about them and their impact on you should reduce.

I should be due one of my scarry ones in the next week, although con't remember if I have had one since I told the wife about them.

I get fierce night-terrors after a particularly hard weekend of partying. Could it be booze etc for anyone in the above cases?

I definitely move around alot more when I'm after a session. I woke up in front of the bathroom mirror once. Dont ask how I reacted.

OP, would you tend to sleep on your stomach/side/back or all???

Reason I ask is that I cannot sleep unless I'm on my stomach, if for some reason I do roll onto my back or fall asleep drunk on my back then I am 100% garunteed to have very intense nightmares/night terrors. Mine take the form of waking up in my dream in the exact setting I fell asleep but someone is slowly opening the door or coming out from under the bed and of course Im completely frozen.......I start to yell but my voice is restricted so my yells become soft yelps and I actually yelp in my sleep!!!! When my girlfriend hears this (the 1st time scard the pi$$ outta her) she rolls me onto my stomach and that puts a stop to it!!!!!

Although it is scary as hell it dosent put me off sleeping.

Sorry, I hate to laugh but the thought of you whispering 'help' in your sleep with your girlfriend there is tickling.

Be my guest, we always get a good laugh out of it. Especially when other
peolpe hear it in the middle of the night and gingerly raise the topic the following morning!!!! (its a very eerie sound I produce)

    Thanks for the replies.
Maybe it is booze related, I'm certainly fond of an ole tipple but I wasn't drinking this week and I had a quiet weekend last weekend. It's just frightening to think that your mind has so many dark caves with all kinds of grotesque, horrifying images lurking in them! In one of my nightmares I pushed my sister into a grave and laughed as she screamed for help. That's pretty sick:/

Yes, it is. A dream I had a long time ago involved me drowning my best friend in our sceptic tank.

    You sound better. :)

I get detailed dreams sometimes, not always nightmares, some are positive. I call them technicolour dreams because they feel so real and vivid. If I try I can usually find a trigger for them which might be something I watched on tv, or a niggling worry. Its amazing how your mind can twist your thoughts into the weirdest dreams. Dont stress about it, its just your subconcious mind working out something-or-other in the peculiar way it does.

My favourite recurring one was being shot by firing squad. I liked it because it didnt hurt and I walked away (as a ghost) afterward. :D

Keep the room cool, keep it aired and that should help.

Have you been under stress lately? or is there an unresolved problem or difficulty on your mind?
I dont usually get nightmares, but for roughly a year after my Da died I had some nasty nightmares & sleep walking.
They eventually just went away on their own.

I find I get nightmares if I sleep on my back. Of course my nightmare were just of giant spiders trying to kill me :D

In the end they are just nightmares and shows that you care for your friends because it is a nightmare to have them killed in your dreams.

You'll go through these phases alright, I'd just say enjoy the macabre weirdness of it all, it is pretty impressive what your mind can do!..I had so many horrific nightmares I've lost count. Recently I dreamt my flatmates and I murdered some randomer, and we left their body in the bathhroom which was destroyed with blood. The other two guys didn't seem too phased by it all and went back to watching TV, i was freaking out thinking how can i live with this for the rest of my life!, then the guys wouldnt help me clean up the mess so i hacked the body up and threw it out on my own as the lazy bastards wouldn't help. I have never been so relieved as I was when I woke from that one!
