PC Gamepad controller recommendations

    Hi,

I've just ordered a new rig and am eagerly awaiting its arrival :)

Having never really used my computer for gaming before so I'm looking at purchasing a gamepad for the first time.

I'm in between getting a Rumble version or a wireless version as I don't believe you can get both offered in the one controller? At the moment, I'm considering getting the Saitek P2600. Has anyone any experience with this? Are there any other controllers I should be l looking at?

Also, how does a rumble gamepad detect when to rumble from within a game? Is this functionality worth sacrificing the obvious benefits of having a wireless controller?

I'd appreciate your comments and suggestions

the only controller you will ever need is a microsoft 360 wired controller. Simply the best controller in the world. No drivers needed either, as windows will install them itself

Nice one, thanks for the advice. Don't suppose you know the cheapest place I'd pick it up?

Without the Wireless functionality and for 3 Euro extra! Getting it instantly doesnt really matter given that my new computer wont arrive for another few weeks

There is another one but thought it would be over your budget, also wireless- http://www.pixmania.com/game-xbox-360-wireless-gamepad/ieuk570954_jvart.html

I got a 360 controller, based on the recommendation of people here...

It is a fantastic controller, lovely & comfortable, and simple to set up (just plus in) I got it for €35 in PC World in Mahon Point (Cork) and I'm dead happy with it...

Ps2 pad with the USB to ps2 adapter, its the perfect gaming pad for every game.

Analogs are better placed for driving games and pro evo is made for it being the only 2 pros over the 360 pad.

get an XBOX pad [original xbox] cut off the cord, get a normal usb cable [printer or one for psp etc] cut of the cord for that

they both have the same coloured wires, join them up [xbox has an extra yellow one at times, tape that up] tape it all up,

    viola !

Or you can get a usb->xbox on ebay, the ps2 convertors dont work well, they dont recognise 2 button presses at the same time, you can try any out on market, no use, cant even shoryuken in Street fighter. Only one that work is the Pelican ps2->ps3 adaptor, which is rare to find.

Hori fighting stick works with 2 or 3 button presses via USB ps2 dunno about the ps2 pad as never had a need for it to do that.

Did that myself before buying the 360 controller. Doesn't work on a fair few games. BioShock for one. Was a nightmare trying to find drivers for it for Vista too.

You must enable Use 360 Controller in Bioshock control options!

Using the original XBox controller modified to USB using Vista drivers it didn't give me the option to use the controller. It only came up when using the actual 360 controller.

Nope. That is why I had to buy the 360 controller as the modded one wouldn't work.

I'd only use a gamepad for roms or maybe driving games, and the xbox pad does me fine. Strategies and shooters, always use a mouse.
