I am upgrading to xp pro from xp home edition on a work mates laptop.
I boot to CD and when the files copy over it says that there is no hard disk detected, check my configuration settings or run a diagnostic.

    any ideas on this?

The main thing I can think of is the HDD is on its way out!! Why not boot up windows and try run the installer from there??

If i remember rightly, to upgrade from home to pro it has to be done from windows. You simply cant do it though booting from the cd.

cancel that ... of course, it gives an upgrade option.

From what i've read it seems that the error message im getting comes up when the computer does not have the drivers for the H/D. "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program."

However, the laptop has a bog standard ATA harddrive. Not sure why a clean installation would not work but in any case the upgrade is fine

I should have been clearer in my opening thread - When i said i was upgrading I meant as in changing to XP pro rather than doing an "upgrade installation". I had wanted to do a clean install instead of upgrading as there sometimes its better to have a fresh system.
Upgrade will do in this case

    Thanks for the help folks

Even using the "upgrade option" it will give you an option to do a clean install.
