Left Bank closing down...

Don't know if any of you heard this, but the Left Bank is closing down in a couple of weeks. None of the staff have been officially informed yet but the main chef has apparently. Bit of a disgrace really because the bartenders, waitresses etc don't know what the hell is going on...

Rumour is that it's being taken over by a club in Limerick called Voodoo and that they'll be closing off the open space between the bar and restaurant upstairs, to make 2 separate floors.

Downstairs : food during the day, nightclub at night.
Upstairs : live music and bar

Not sure how much of this is actually true but not sure if it'll be a good move or not.

Is it actually closing down? Are these voodoo guys not just taking over and re-designing it?

Edit: I can't really see this being true as any time I've been in there it's usually pretty busy although I am usually just in there the odd Saturday night.

No <SNIP> harm if it's closing down!
It was a much better spot before it became the left bank!

Edit by muffler: Gillie, please remember this is not the after hours forum

    No problem. Apology accepted.

As I said have a wee think of what you are posting and you will see where it could have a negative effect on the person being mentioned.

i quite injoy going to the left bank, but have noticed its got quieter in the last few weeks, seen some where on another page that it was voodoo in letterkenny taking over, have been there a few times, very lively spot

Definately being taken over by voodoo From Letterkenny. It will most likely have a night club aimed at dance music similiar to Letterkenny

    Cool.
I think i've been in that place in LK and it's a good spot IIRC?

Just what Sligo needs more crappy dance music. :(

I hope the Clarence runs similar nights to its pre closing line up when it gets back on its feet, it'd be nice to have some place to go again.

Last night in the Left Bank was weird, a mixture of cheesy and great rock played at reasonable volume. Pity there was only a few people there, still better then 99% of the nights I've been in the place.

Whens the official closing down date?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,797 ✭✭✭bobcar61

Saturday is the last night it will be open....I wonder if there will be any closing down offers on the drink

    Good riddance to the place.
Ever since it changed from the garavogue it has had rude staff, poor floor layout (bar moved), disgusting toilets, beat up furniture...
Plus they were trying to charge us in one weds night i think for a couple of beers cos there was a crap dj playing and about five people in there. we laughed and turned and thought they're going under if they keep going like that. Loved the garavogue so hopefully the new owners will do as good a job. Is the clarence ever reopening? DId they run out of money for renovations or what's the story?

What was Sat night like? I nver managed to make it down

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 262 ✭✭Iompair

It was pretty busy, didn't seem like they were checking to many IDs.

Other then that the usual music and they ran out of alcohol around 1.30.

There was some good music coming from Bar Eile, it was for a 21st, can't remember the name of the band though.

saturday night was pretty mental in there!! really good night though.

pretty sad aswell to be honest. rip left bank :-D

new place should be opening in january.

Left Bank was a shadow of the Garavogue back in it's heyday. About 5-7 years ago when the whole place was open on a Sat night. I really loved it back then. Then they shut upstairs. Then they moved the bar. then the crowd changed. No loss IMHO considering what it had become.

heard this weekend that the left bank is going to reopen in 2 weeks time. pretty sure it's for sligo live and then the rallye in november.

will close again at the end of the year, to be replaced by a night club.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,206 ✭✭✭gustavo

Presumably this is Left Bank in its current incarnation rather than the new ownership?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 220 ✭✭Rozbeef

yep still the left bank. i suppose the owners hadn't thought it through before closing down. not sure what they're doing about staff though.

I never really liked the Left Bank that much or the Garavouge before that except for when they used to get some good bands in. Saw Petronella play a rockin show there one night, the place was packed. What's Tabby at now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,535 ✭✭✭Radharc na Sleibhte

    Album due shortly I think.
As far as I know, he's still gigging working up a bit of interest.
I love the guy. I think he's an awesome talent, and a shame things didn't kick on since the international tv exposure.

oh please tabby had his chance ages ago.

Cant say I know too much about the Left bank. If reopens must check it out though. Tabby appears to be involved in organising some music festival coming up. Twas in the Champion!

Dunno what Tabby has to do with the Garavogue (apart from his mam who worked in the kitchen), but anyways.... I much preferred the place before they moved the bar to the side wall. The "renovation" was ****e - the bar was shifted to one side & a bit of scabby carpet throw down to cover the hole in the floor where it used to be.

It was a crap place for gigs too - rule number one for a gig venue ; make the stage big enough so that a band can fit on it without hitting each other with their guitar necks.

Also the music wasn't the best at all.. I mean, do you really want to hear "Lovecats" when you're out on a Saturday night? It's not the school disco from the 80s.

Wasn't a bad place to go though - better than Fiddlers which is the ultimate bogger hang out, though with a decent renovation some decent entertainment, it could be really cool. It's not like the Clarence is making much of an effort to draw the Garavogues clientele.

is there any work being done on it at the moment?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,739 ✭✭✭✭starbelgrade

    No.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 220 ✭✭Rozbeef

nope still the same so far. everything is still in there. last i heard was the left bank was meant to be opening for the christmas holidays and new year. that didn't happen. voodoo then pulled out of the takeover and nothing since then.

doesn't look like anything will happen before the summer, which is a total shambles because it's one of the best places when the weather is good :-(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 147 ✭✭tommmy

I dont really get it to be honest.when it was the garavouge it was good then when it was the left bank it feel apart could they not re design it a bit better have it more like the garavouge.take that bar away.and open upstairs.its in a good spot its just a waste at the moment.
knowing this town they will probaly knock it and make it into apartments

it was a pity it closed down, i loved going there during the summer, sitting outside and watching the scenery!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,206 ✭✭✭gustavo

really hope it gets opening again soon , theres no place in sligo at all that really fills it's remit

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28 dingo dog

i walked past the place the other day and i saw sign of life in there....so maybe it will be opening soon!!:)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,484 ✭✭✭JIZZLORD

i hope it'll be back before the summer. it was never the same once it became the left bank. it looks really rough now. they didnt keep it well maintained on the outside in the last few years and when i walked past it on saturday you could see that all the outside wood had been neglected over the last few years.

To be honest, they didn't keep it well mantained inside either did they? Were ya ever stuck up around the pool table when it was busy? The smell of pish comin from the bogs was rank.

Have to agree with el_weirdo on that.. always bothered me too!

You didn't even have to be too near the loos or pool table but in the general vicinity was enough.

You might actually be scarily close to the truth there! I've heard on the rumour mill that the whole building is a mess, was shoddily built, and nobody will touch it. Wouldn't be surprised if it lies vacant for another year or two and is then replaced by apartments or offices.:(
On a related note (OK slightly off topic) anybody know whats happening with Hargadon's on O'Connell St? It's such a shame that it's being let go - one of the finest pubs in SLigo (if not Ireland!) and it's just sitting there rotting away
