I'm looking into picking up a 50cc moped for the daily commute, Dublin traffic just gets worse and worse ! Just wondering does a Full Car licence cover me to drive a 50cc moped or do i need a bike licence ?

Also, looking at picking up a Suzuki Katana, will be doing about 15 miles in total a day so opinions welcome on that bike !

    Thanks

That is fine for 50CC scooters, as far as I know

With a full car licence you can have a passenger aswell, but comfirm that they are covered in your insurance policy

Dont know anything about that bike tho.

    Good luck

Yep full drivers license covers you!! I have had 2 katana's last one just died but did last nearly 4 years and was 7 years old- they are not bad bikes.

Not if you didn't pass your car test in Ireland - class M is not one of the EU harmonised categories and doesn't transfer from country to country.

Not if you passed it within about the last 18 months (there will be a 3 digit code on the back of your licence which translates to 'no moped entitlement' - there is a table of these codes somewhere on the net but can't find it now.

Not if the moped is capable of exceeding 45km/h (which means you need a class A1 or A licence to ride it and you need to pass the bike theory test to get one.)

You're probably overlooking the 45km/h restriction though as almost all 50cc machines are capable of exceeding that speed. If they can exceed 45km/h a class M licence does not cover them.

The 50cc scooters are generally sold with a restrictor limiting them to 45 km/h, thus being legal to drive with a car licence (subject to all the provisions mentioned above). I think alot of people get the restrictor removed. Depends on the model as to how easy this is. However this makes it technically illegal to ride one, and worse, could invalidate your insurance.
