Ok I started doing squats with a smith machine today no matter which way I used the towel I still need more padding I was wondering where in Dublin can you get a decent heavy duty squat pad ? (im heading into Dublin tomorrow morning and I will be around the Connelly Station / Capel street area)

Also I noticed a lot of guys in pictures use boots for what I assume is ankle support I was just wondering if this was something I should be doing ??

don't put the bar on your neck you'll bruise yourself if you do put it across your shoulders. You don;t need a pad with proper technique.

Yeah to be honest your back should be your padding! Learn to put the bar lower down on your back and/or get a bigger back.

It is across my back/shoulders ,on my next leg day Im going to be doing a few sets with no weight to make sure I have the technique right (I wasn’t happy with the position of my knees today) im using the smith because there are no free Olympic bars in the gym I use :( (that’s probably a good thing because my sense of balance needs work I almost lost it a few times today doing lunges:rolleyes: )

If you're just learning to squat, you really really should use freeweights. If not you'll be way worse off when do do a proper squat. Oh and get out of whatever gym you're in, it sounds like a joke!

I know what you mean , when im doing the movement I can feel the bar being guided on the way up :(

I wouldn’t go as far as to say it’s a joke but it is definitely a fitness centre as apposed to a weight lifting gym in all fairness to the guy that runs it the place is kept spotless and they do have a fair few machines for the space , it’s just there’s no free Olympic weights and no cable crossover , I think Im going to stick my head into The Hercules club after Ive been to nutrition connection and enquire about membership , it means I will have to travel in on the train to work out but it’s looking like the most convenient option :)

If you are having issues with squatting, why not try front squats, you will not lift as much , but should keep better form ...

Try the Pinnacle Gym in Camden st, seem to have a good setup...
