Country or County First?

Allow me to start this thread with the token "apogies if this has been done before"

As you can tell this is a simple enough poll Country or County first? I don't mean on a sporting level either, just on general terms.

Of the 2, I consider myself a Dub first and an Irishman second but most of my friends considered themselves Irishmen first and Dubs second, what about you?

I get more passionate about my county than my country so I picked county. Very proud to be Irish and all that but like I said, more passionate about my county.

    Species for me.

I'm Dublin born and raised but I'd get more wound-up watching a Waterford hurling match than either a Dubs game or Ireland game. Pretty strange I suppose.

Northsider first, then Dubliner, then European. :D

I'll go with country because the county is full of dubs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,060 ✭✭✭Anto McC

The Northside/Southside thing is good for the wind up but it doesn't matter all that much to me. It could be because i live right on the Quays though.

Northsider also, Tipperary North that is :p

I'm sure all the Cork posters will put their county first, typical Cork arrogance

Irish by birth, Dub by grace of God. ;)

Country for me, though having dual citizenship may have something to do with that...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,367 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

    Human - Man - European - Irish - Galwegian

in that order. I would be surprised if anyone other than Dubs or Corkonians pick the latter option tbh.

    Then Irish

    Then Dub

I try and keep it South Side. I don't talk to anyone who isn't from South Dublin, so I'm sure as hell not going to associate myself with them.

Country first. I only get wound up about the county thing when it comes to GAA, but otherwise I hate the bloody place :D

I've lived in Dublin all my life but I would consider myself Irish first. I love Dublin, but I hold a lot more repect for the other counties.

Dublin is percieved as an inward-looking county by the rest of the Republic. It's like this walled state within itselft that looks to Britain, US, and Europe for its daily dose of culture. None of this backward Irish crap. Dublin's culture is becomming increasingly non-descript.

How many Dubliners find Irish culture, eg. music, language, a little embarissing? I'd say many.

As I live in a different country, I also choose Country first, but if I meet anyone from Ireland (which is quite a few!) then I choose county...

I certainly don't, i love Irish culture but i'm still a Dub first.

County, and the best damn county in this Country for sure. Contae an Cabhan!

I've travelled abroad, and when asked where I'm from I always said Dublin.

I'm a definite Northsider, and a little bit of me dies every morning when I cross that river on my way to work.

I'm no Gah fan though. I just hate associating myself with culchies.

I'm a very proud Dub & Northsider but I would always consider myself Irish first.
This Dublin versus the rest of the country crap really does my head in!!!!

    Extremely confused by this post!!!

You love Dublin, but hold more respect for other counties.
There is no "backward Irish crap" in Dublin (surely to be found in the counties you have more respect for?!?!!?)
Dubliners find Irish culture embarrassing, you've lived in Dublin all your life, and you have an Irish name.

Perhaps we wouldn't be as inward looking if the rest of the country didn't hate us so much :D

As for Dubliners being embarrassed by Irish music and language
I don't know where you're getting that one from...

I've posted this before, but to quote the late great Phil Lynott:
When I'm in Dublin I say I'm from Crumlin. When I'm in Crumlin I say I'm from Leighlin Rord, and when I'm in Leighlin Rord I say I'm a Lynott.
Just change Dublin to Kildare, Crumlin to Leixlip and Leighlin road to my estate.

Has to be country, although being from Louth I could be forgiven for not saying otherwise. It's such a kick ass place.

Aaahh Leixlip (Little Ballyfermot) ya gotta love the place, the finest selection of tracksuit wearing fake Dubliners in the country. We were in the Court Yard the other night discussing how many people born and bred there who pretend they are Dub's, as soon as summer comes they get out there Dublin jerseys and put them on, even though they are from Kildare, they even have the fake accents, when you ask them WHY ?, they say its because their Dad is from Dublin, WTF ??? My Dad is from Dublin, but I wouldnt be caught DEAD in a Dublin jersey !!!. We came to the conclusion that they are probably retarded.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,061 ✭✭✭✭Terry

    Indeed.
My father was from Dublin too. I never considered myself a Dub though.

I think you'll find the same people wearing the Dublin jerseys are also manU supporters.

I'm from Westmeath, I don't know how excited someone can get about a county whose name is based on it's geographic location relative to a neighbouring county.

Its a bit like Austrian people, Austria in German is Österreich which literaly translates as "The Eastern Empire". So when you ask someone from Austria where they are from auf Deutsch, they will reply "I am from The East Empire". Rubbish.

Well, i tell people i'm irish, then if they ask, i'll mumble that i'm from sligo and apologise for the horrors we've let loose on the world.

"Earthling" - in this day and age it's time to look at the big picture.

    "Solar Systemian"?

Solian would be the given term, being that the solar system would be named "Sol" after our sun.

Galway City - Connaught - Ireland - Galway County

Let me explain the above hierachy. I have lived all my childhood life and much of my adult life in Galway city and its the place that I feel most associated with. After all its the town that has shaped who I am and therefore it will always be my home, no matter where I settle.

My parents are from sligo but if I go back another couple of generations I find that I have descendents from Mayo and Roscommon as well and hence I feel a certain afinity with the west of ireland as opposed to ireland as a whole. People in the west have historically been more isolated from dublin, britain and europe than the rest of the country and I believe this has made people from the west a little more unique then the irish from elsewhere.

In GAA I always support Galway first but I also like to see the other counties in Connaught do well.

Allot of pople are like this but i see it as nothing more than a substuite for tribal warefare, neibhering tribes who need to compete against one another to show strgenth also some people use country/country as an excuse for violence
