My Bro wants to get The elder scrolls IV Oblivion for his laptop. the requirements are a 3Ghz Pentium 4 or equivalent. My bro has an AMD Turion x64 x2 803Mhz. how does that compare to pentium? what would be the equivalent pentium chip to that AMD chip?

AMD don't make Turion X2 chips at 803Mhz. You should find more information on your chip. 800Mhz is no doubt the speed the chip was running at when not under much load.

    See the product list,
    http://products.amd.com/en-us/NotebookCPUResult.aspx?f1=AMD+Turion%E2%84%A2+64+X2+Dual-Core+Mobile+Technology&f2=&f3=&f4=1024&f5=S1&f6=&f7=&f8=&f9=1600&

AMD Turions are prob equiv to the Intel Core Duo, although are no doubt below most if not all Core 2 Duo chips.

AMD Turion x2 should beat most of the normal P4s although against a 3Ghz P4 you'll need to have a one of the top 2 Turion X2 chips.

Your CPU is fine for it, the GPU is really the more important element.

graphics should be ok. its an nVidia Gforce go something or other with 256 Ram. Thanks guys.

just a note on the processor speed. i right clicked on my computer and viewed the chip speed there. i dont see how that could fluctuate depending on the load the cpu is on. in task manager sure, but not in my computer properties.

Properties does actually do a live read of the CPU info.

So my proc in work machine ids itself in properties as "Intel Pentium M processor 1.85Ghz 1.06Ghz"

So the name is giving away the true top speed while the second number is showing what it's running at now.

Did a properties again and the second number changed value to top speed. Crazy but the processor in a mobile machine will fluctuate a lot.

Unless he has a top of the range laptop with a minimum fo 2gb ram, a high end cpu something like a t7200 and a very high end graphics card like a 7800GO then he can forget about it.

Um, what's crazy about that? The speed changes according to system load to save battery. It's a design feature.

It's nice to know that my laptop would still be considered high end. :)

Actually, it's quite possible and perhaps actually likely is not ok. The X2 is very commonly paired with the Go6150....while yes, it's 256mb, it's useless for Oblivion. It does work though, at low settings, if you use the Olblivion mod, but the bottom line is that you really need to check out exactly what card it is - as has been said the Gpu will limit you in the game far sooner then the X2 will. I think the minimum card you'd be wanting for a game like Oblivion to run comfortably and not look like crap would be a Go7400/X1400 (newer cards, 8400GS, HD2400, etc)

get morrowind , its the one before oblivion , arguably better but the + side is it will run on old machinery , :D give it a lash (imo oblivion is only great running it at fullsettings at high res's the overall feel is lost at 800x600 on low settings and still getting lag :(
