I am using Power DVD Ultra 7.3 to watch BD Films.
My PC is connected to the Amp via optical and Power DVD is set to use the SPDIF output, but when i choose "Uncompressed 5.1 Audio" (PCM) it is just down mixed to stereo...............It plays standard Dolby Digital fine

I have had a look on google but am unable to find any info..........

    Anyone else had this?

From what I gather, the soundcard needs to be able to output full 5.1 in PCM, which is rare.

No standard optical connector at the moment carries uncompressed digital audio . They are all compressed to some extent and need to be decoded by whatever amp they are connected too.

Blu-ray and HD-DVD carry uncompressed streams but HDMI 1.3 is needed to carry these.

There are currently some soundcards and graphics cards with HDMI 1.3 which will carry the uncompressed audio from bluray or HD-DVD to a HDMI 1.3 enabled amp .

I believe the HDMI enabled graphics cards are the best option at the moment for a PC if you want to carry the HD audio from HD media.

The Radeon 2600 is one example
