Computer Crashing

My Computer is powering off at the rate of about once a day at the minute.

I'm trying to figure out what the problem is.

I changed the power cable at the back and I thought maybe that had solved the problem, but nah after 2 days it crashed again. :(

I had recently been fiddling around with the pc a lot, I moved the components to a new chassis and installed a new heatsink and successfully reduced cpu temperatues by a helluva lot. However my cpu had been under a lot of stress and I think there is a chance it's damaged now, also I don't discount that I might have damaged the motherboard.

One other issue I had recently was my computer halting when i booted it up at Scanning Ide Drives.... after four dots it halted and it wouldn't go any further but this has not occured in a few days now.

I've also attached a Belkin UPS but I think the crashing occured once or twice before I added this, so while I don't rule it out as a potential cause I don't think it is.

Anyone any ideas on why this is happening?

it might be your power supply check the voltages with a multimeter.should be getting 3volts out of one and 5 out of the other.is it turning totally off or just restarting.have you tried monitoring the cpu temp wth a free app.

Cheers. It might very well be the power supply actually. I have a spare one. I'll try that out.
Most of the time it totally turns off, but today it rebooted.

I have a cpu temperature monitor. since I installed the heatsink the temperature never goes above the mid 40's Celsius. Before that it was as high as the 80's sometimes. So I don't think it has got to do with the cpu's current temperature, though as I say it might be damaged now and maybe this is a cause.
