When quoting other posts?

So I was wondering, when you quote other people's posts do you correct stuff like spelling & grammar??? I was replying earlier, noticed some horrible spelling mistakes (they're instead of their, your instead of you're, etc.)

It got me a thinking, is it bad form to correct the spelling? Is there any other etiquette when it comes to quoting others??

(p.s. it's a friday evening, waiting to finish work for weekend, hence the random post)

I think it's rude to correct the mistakes just publicly point them out at the bottom of your post.

I know what YOUR talking about - it's tempting but since it's a "Quote" I'd tend to leave it as it is therefore making it an actual quote

I'll do it some times, but then occasionally when I realise what I'm doing, I'll change them back :p. Other times, I'll just be auto-correcting anything with a red line under it (Firefox).

Can't belive I missed that - I was looking through the post hoping for a spelling mistake to fix!

    Ha ha ha

No I wouldn't do it, I think it's rude. It's only a message board, everything doesn't have to be perfect anyway!

I was gonna go for three question marks in a row being bad grammar, but that was pretty tenuous.

I say leave the mistakes in. A quote is a quote. You can always throw in (sic) if you really can't help yourself.

    Agreed.

Perhaps a comma/full stop between the words Mistake and Just would help readers ?

That's actually why I do it, because Firefox shows them up.

(I apologise with the Friday, I had considered a deliberate mistake to get you lot going, but that one I missed)

I would do it if someone uses txt spk to make a show of them

I'm not fond of misquoting even if it's something as small as a missing letter or apostrophe.

You put the quote tags around each part you want to quote!

For example: (remove the space before the "=" sign)

    correcting quoted posts = O.C.D.

I'm not a f*cking English teacher for gods sake....... If there's something in the post that is hard to understand, then I'll make a bit of an alteration so that other people looking at me quoting it will know what I'm responding to.

But in general, no, I don't care to.

Every time you correct an error, a Spell Czech god is born.

Na, I leave it as it is.

If your quoting a long post but only a small amount of it is relevant to your answer do you delete the non relevant stuff from the quote ? ... I do !

(does that even make sense ?)

    Yeah. ;):p

yeah, what's the point of quoting the whole speil if you are just commenting on certain points?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 441 ✭✭marius

If you are really worried about just use (sic)

It's a Friday evening and if no-one could be bothered explaining its fine.
I right click on "Post Reply" and open that page in a new tab, then copy and paste the relevant quotes into my new post then use the "Wrap
tags around selected text" on each seperate peice of text.

It would indeed be bad manners, unless it was blatantly bad like txt spk, you may not know whether or not someone has dyslexia or some other form of learning of disability, would you advise someone with a limp how to walk?. In general when quoting someone and wishing to identify their syntactical errors you enter (sic) beside said mistake
for example: 'Their(sic) are many ways to make dough' Mr.Brennan (1978)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 970 ✭✭✭lemansky

I would leave it as it doesn't bother me. I wouldn't even bother with sticking in a (sic).

I have to say though, that I never thought about the whole dyslexia thing. More reason for me to leave it, as knowing my luck if I did correct somebody, it would turn out to be somebody with dyslexia....:(

Well, you'd be needing to "fly the flag". (See sig)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

I want to correct it but that would be too much :p

Btw, I may have been the first person banned from the Spell Czechs.

What did you do, use txt spk? What goes on in that forum anyway?
