I'm Thinking About Engagement Rings- What Do You Think Of This One?

    Hey Folks,

I've begun thinking about an engagement ring for the missus. She has mentioned 'were' I to propose that she doesn't want something too expensive. It should be something sleek as well as anything with bits protruding she'd be liable to loose or break!
I've been looking online and in the occasional jewellery shop and I quite like the look of this one on Ebay. It's too cheap though so I'll continue looking online and in shops for something like this, how much should I expect to pay in a shop for it? I thought titanium rings were expensive?

I think that's more a wedding band than an engagment ring (sorry)

    1. Why titanium?

    2. I somewhat agree that that appears to be more of a wedding band (ie diamond is too small relative to the band)

Hmnnn it's listed and decribed as an engagement ring. I'm going with a non-traditional metal as the likes of titanium and platinum are harder wearing, keep their finish longer and are lighter on the finger.

It does look a lot more like a wedding band rather than an engagment ring, I personaly would go for platnium over titanium and i would want the diamond to be a bit bigger than that. But you know your girlfriend likes and dislikes better than any of us, so if you think she would like it go for it.

You dont have to propose with a ring. You could take her ring shopping after she hopefully says yes!!
Or go shopping before and get her to show you the style/type she likes and you can choose a similar one.

She has to wear to ring so I think she should get a choice about what it looks like.
    Best of luck.

I did ask her if she wanted to choose the ring but she said I could do that. After quizzing her a little and looking at various styles in the shop windows she seems to lean towards a simpler looking ring.
Looking back at the ring I linked too above it is listed as an engagement/wedding ring, so I guess that one's out the window!

Its obviously her choice but the picture of the ring you posted is not sparkly enough.

You can get some really nice rings with the diamonds sunk into the band - baguette style

    I'll continue looking so!

    Yes, that ring looks terrible.

Awww, I quite liked it myself. What do you not like about it Cathy?

No no no and more no. That ring looks awful! It's more like a wedding band than anything else ... it just looks odd ....

It looks like a wedding ring and the stone is far too small. What would you have done for a wedding ring in that case?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,073 ✭✭✭✭Kintarō Hattori

Well for a wedding ring I'd have gone for something without a stone, something like the following:

So what your really saying is I should go for something more showy with the engagement ring, something with a reasonable sized stone and then go for something simpler with the wedding ring?

Well. that was what we did. My engagement ring has two diamonds and a saphire but our wedding rings are identical plain bands of gold. I suppose it depends on what you like but I loved showing off that I was engaged, I was very proud of it. If you had gone with what you had originally planed then there would be no visible difference between the two (the wedding rings are fine). Sorry for being so blunt, I know that you are crazy about your gf and just wanted you make her happy.

    It just shows tastes vary.
I really like the style of that ring, but the diamond is a little bit small.

I'm not a fan of the poke your eye out HUGE diamond rings, though I'm sure lots of people are.

DO NOT BUY ENGAGEMENT RINGS ON EBAY, my bf did and got scammed big time, paid alot of money for something that may have come out of a christmas cracker and ended up having to buy in a jewellers.
an engagement ring is something of a personal choice and its usually the bling that makes it special, well in my opinion anyways

Your right Cathy that there wouldn't have been a significant difference between the engagement ring and the wedding band. I guess I'll be keeping an eye out for something with more or bigger rocks so! Yeah I like the idea of plain and simple wedding bands, so I guess that leaves me free to go a bit mad with the engagement ring.
I appreciate you looking out for me and the GF, your right, I am indeed crazy about her.

I don't think I'll be buying the ring on eBay, that strikes me as a little impersonal and takes away some of the special feeling of it. Browsing through eBay lets me get a look at what's out there and gives me idea's as to what I'd like her/our rings to look like as I don't have much time to browse through jeweller's windows. Thanks for the words of advice!

There is always the option of a bevel set ring - minimal potential for snagging on things, like this :

    or

A titanium tension-set diamond. It is still made of a non-traditional metal, but looks more like an engagement ring than your initial picture

    Hey embee,

Thanks for those links. I like the way the stone is set in that first ring. Minimal snagging is important! That site looks excellent, there are some really nice rings on there. I know I said I wouldn't be buying online, but some I might look at getting the wedding bands there as some of the designs are fantastic.

One thing folks. When choosing wedding bands, are both rings supposed to look identical, the only difference being size? And yeah I know, we should be choosing the wedding band together.

OP, dio you think you should buy the ring? If it were me and my bf asked me to marry him I would want to pick my own ring. Remember she has to wear it on her hand for all to see and she might have completely different tastes to you

    Hi How Strange,

Thanks for the feedback but no offence, did you read the whole thread? Have a look at post No: 7.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,339 ✭✭✭How Strange

No offence taken but keep the receipt. I can't think of anyone except my best friend that I would trust to buy jewellry for me. Especially rings as what looks nice on one person can look awful on another.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,073 ✭✭✭✭Kintarō Hattori

Good stuff. Oh of course I'll be keeping the receipt. I can't believe she's leaving this down to me. I'm almost certain I'll pick something and she won't like it! Heh, but what can ya do!

Ever think of a Token ring? That's how i done it, bought her a ring to propose with and then when she said yes we went ring shopping.

also when she said she didn't want you to spend much did she suggest how much she though was acceptable?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,333 ✭✭✭Zambia

How much are you looking at spending ? I might have a good idea..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,073 ✭✭✭✭Kintarō Hattori

    Hey Noelie,

That sounds like a good idea, do many people do that?

Zambia, I was thinking about spending €1000 or so. If something is really nice I could spend more. I know it's not alot, but she's told me not to spend too much as we're saving for a house/apartment at the minute. What's your idea?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 999 ✭✭✭Noelie

Yeah i think a lot of people do, two of our friends who have gotten engaged lately done it also. The token ring i bough only cost about €60 and she wears it on her other hand.

When looking for the ring we ended up going to a place called O'Connors in Harlod Cross. They actually make the rings themselves and claim to sell at half the RRP, I'm not sure how true that is. Any way they have a very large selection and we got the exact ring my g/f wanted. also since they make they you can get the ring quicker.
